The Shadow knows you are all missing the fellowship and repartee of our normal Rotary lunches at Kooyong LTC.

Never mind, we still have an active Rotary Club, and the Australia Day event will probably be something to remember.

Normal meetings will resume (Wu-flu permitting) on Tuesday 2nd February.

The Rotarian Health Care Professionals Group wish you a Happy New Year.

Who spotted The Shadow’s Scrooge-like addition of “Bah! Humbug!” on his Xmas card in out last edition?  Typical Shadow behaviour.

Umpires in sport are always right (usually)

Who else but Richard Logan would argue with the umpire?

When you’re out, you’re out.  Just accept it, even if you don’t  know the rules.  ;-)

Richard responded by quoting John McEnroe: “You cannot be serious!”. They both maintain that umpires are always wrong. Good luck with that . . . .

The Labuschagnes

Marnus Labuschagne is a South African-born Australian international cricketer who plays for the Australian national team and domestic cricket for the Queensland cricket team. He also currently plays county cricket for Glamorgan and in the Big Bash League for the Brisbane Heat. - Wikipedia

Pieter Hermias Cornelius 'Lappies' Labuschagné is a South African rugby union footballer who regularly plays as a flanker. He currently plays in the Japanese Top League with Kubota Spears and is currently playing for the Sunwolves. He represents Japan at international level having satisfied residency requirements. -  Wikipedia

While keenly following international sporting events, The Shadow remains confused:

How can it be, that the former has his name pronounced La-boo-shane and the latter La-boos-kag-nay?

In “The Networker”

Did you read Katrina Flinn’s article in the District Bulletin. ”The Networker”, just before Xmas?

Katrina spreads the news that Rotary Hawthorn’s SkyHydrant project will fund the purchase and installation of a filter to provide clean drinking water to one of the Karen refugee camps.  The pump will provide 10,000 litres of filtered water per day, and the local community will assist with the installation of the fixtures under supervision, and will also be taught how to maintain the pump unit.

Katrina also mentions how Rotary Hawthorn provided assistance to Rotary Nhill for the sponsorship of Karen student Mu Yeh Htoo (right) to attend the National Youth Science Forum. It is the first time that a student from Nhill Secondary College has applied and attended the Forum.

Nicely done, Katrina!

It brings back memories of that lovely weekend when we went to Nhill  -

Anne Scott reminds us that her friend Princess Azizah of Malaysia is now Queen Azizah, and that she still retains her interest in the Girl Guide movement.

Anne sent us a happy photo as a souvenir of the evening we spent with her.

Australia Day

Noel Halford reminds us of the clubs commitment to the Australia Day event to be held on Tuesday 26th January at Victoria Park, Kew.

The organisers of this significant community event have called upon Rotary to assist run the day, so please let Noel know when you are available to help out.

Word of The Year

The Shadow’s choice for our own Word of The Year, 2020 is ‘asymptomatic’

There are two reasons for this choice:

(1) this word, which played almost no role in 2019, has been all over the medical reports that have dominated our news media this year; and, more importantly,

(2) most Australians for most of the year have been mostly asymptomatic – despite the hysterical panic of public servants and politicians.

So the word that sums up the experience of the pandemic for most of us is – ‘asymptomatic’.

Have a happy 2021!
