Rotary Club of Hawthorn’s zoom meeting today, on the 22ndof September drew over 40 People.

As our Hawthorn Rotary Club remains upbeat, in good health and optimistic in this ever-changing world.

Today, our club was officially presented with the 2019/20 Rotary Citation and Silver Distinction by Grant Hocking, past DG of Rotary district 9800.  This award recognises those clubs that show their commitment to success is not by luck but instead the strategic planning and activities completed, to put a club into a strong position to sustain success. Congratulations to all our valuable members and especially to Past President Charlotte England for submitting our details for this deserving recognition.

Our guest speaker today was a very impressive young man named Mr. Edward Tudor (right). Edward is the founding executive director of Melbourne Indigenous Transition School and credits his veterinarian parents who provided him with valuable role modelling that he would build his success upon. Dr John Carr Riddell did a splendid job in introducing the guest speaker along with Mr. Bill Troedel giving the well-deserved vote of thanks.

Edward Tudor gave special thanks to the Treasurer Hon. Josh Frydenberg, who is also an honorary member of our club. Josh’s direct influence and position with the Prime Minister Hon. Scott Morrison, assisted greatly in achieving the current funding for this remarkable programme.

I am proud to highlight that Rotary is also a sponsor of this programme and I encourage any Rotarians that may like to directly sponsor a disadvantaged Indigenous child, to take the next step by contacting our secretary for further information.

Today, I further updated the club with progress on some current projects within the club:
  • We are planning a fundraising Virtual Rotary Bridge Club as a fellowship activity. Simon O’Donoghue will be co ordinating this future event.
  • Dr Kevin Rose announced National Youth Scientific Forum recipient Thanh is a   well-qualified student from Auburn High School and thanked all those Hawthorn Rotary members involved in the Selection process.

Please tune in next week 29th September, to listen to Mr. Mark Ferry who will highlight ‘The Street University’ concept, which is a youth development created by the Mr. Ted Noffs Foundation. Take a closer look at how this modern concept is providing community-based services and interactive spaces for young people aged 12-25.

Have a great week…

Dr Tilak Dissanayake
Centenary President Hawthorn Rotary Club
