Speaker and topic for next week: Being a Parent to a High School Senior Student-Athlete during COVID.

Valerie Schmidt will talk about how the college recruiting process has been preCOVID, and what they did as a family since March 2020 to prepare Hunter to be a Men's Volleyball Recruit when Spring 2020 volleyball was canceled and gyms were closed.  

Bio:

Val is a Financial Advisor for Ameriprise Financial since 1997.  Her primary focus has been College, Retirement, Small Business Planning.  From 2000 to 2003, she was the Manager who trained advisors to get their licenses and start their financial careers.  Currently, she works with individual clients to plan for their future financial goals.  She was named the Business Woman of the Year by the Organization of Women Leaders in 2017.  She also runs a nonprofit - The Bella Project, that gives prom dresses to high school girls who are low income, special needs, or critically ill.  The nonprofit is currently inactive due to COVID.

Val joined the West Honolulu Rotary Club in 1998.  She was the youngest member and the 3rd woman in the club.  She won an award on the district level for being an outstanding Female Rotarian. After various board positions, Val became the 2nd woman President in the 2002-2003 year.  Her son was born during her year of Presidency.  In 2005, Val took a sabbatical from West Honolulu Rotary to take care of her son who had a rare heart condition.  She rejoined the club a year later.  She was one of the WHRC orientation Past Presidents from 2010 to 2020.
