September Knights

New young knights joined the assemblies of champions at their respective schools this week through Early Act First Knight.
The character education program sponsored through local Rotary Clubs handed out the first round of monthly awards at five Killeen Independent School District
elementary schools.
Mountain View and Harker Heights elementary schools in Harker Heights and Timber Ridge, Reeces Creek and West Ward in Killeen take part in the program.
At Mountain View Tuesday, Sir Cass Garcia of the Knights of the Guild told students a story of Sir George before handing out medallions for students showing the
trait of confidence. The legend tells of a knight who promised to protect his people by slaying a red-eyed dragon. After the beast bolted from a cave, the knight
and dragon battled for days until Sir George managed to subdue the huge flying creature and lead it through town.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s never been done before if you believe in your heart,” said Sir Cass to the students gathered in the school cafeteria.
At Timber Ridge Elementary School in Killeen Sir Paul Clontz handed out medallions to students for showing the trait of discipline.
He used the summer Olympics as metaphor to describe the discipline to train and compete at the highest level and the humility and grace athletes show in
victory or defeat.
In addition to honoring a student in each grade, Timber Ridge honored two teachers selected by their peers.
Kindergarten teacher Brittany Martinez and fifth-grade teacher Theresa Perez earned the medallions for September. “It means the world to me to share with my
students,” Perez said of her surprise honor. She explained that someone at the school congratulated her recently on her students’ good behavior and she shared
the compliment with her students.
“They get excited and look forward to hearing the names called,” Perez said of her fifth-graders and the knighting program. “I think they hold me to a higher
standard based on what I expect of them,” she said.
Perez pointed out that her class made a shield for use in the knighting ceremonies. Each month she said the student last honored would bear the class shield.
Union Grove and Eastern Hills middle schools also take part in the character education program and will honor their first knights of the year next month.
