October 24, 2023 – ARVADA, CO – October 24 is World Polio Day.  No cases of polio caused by wild poliovirus have originated in the U.S. since 1979.  Since 1988 there has been a 99.9% reduction in cases of polio worldwide (from ~360k down to to 9).  There are now only two countries that remain endemic — Pakistan and Afghanistan. However, in June 2022 a case of poliovirus was confirmed in Rockland County, NY.

To recognize World Polio Day, Arvada Rotary Club and Arvada Sunrise Rotary Club hosted a breakfast on October 24 at 7:30 a.m. at Indian Tree Golf Club, 7555 Wadsworth Boulevard.  Arvada residents are invited to join the city’s Rotary Clubs to learn about Rotary’s three-decade effort to fully eradicate the poliovirus.  The Chair of Rotary District 5450 PolioPlus Committee, Dr. Marny Eulberg, presented an update on the current status of polio eradication, discussed the different poliovirus types, and shared the resources available to polio survivors.

The Foundations of Arvada Rotary Club and Arvada Sunrise Rotary Club have each set aside $1,000 to match donations from the Arvada community during the month of October.  Funds will be forwarded to the Rotary Foundation where they will be matched two for one by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Donations can be made through Arvada Sunrise Rotary or mailed to ASR Foundation, PO Box 740144, Arvada, CO 80006.
