Blue Badge talk – Charlie Johnson
Charlie is joined Rotary 20 years ago in Marina, CA. He was born in Oakland during the last week of the 1940 World’s Fair at Treasure Island. He grew up in Woodside and attended Cal Poly. He went into the Air Force during the early years of the Viet Nam era. As an officer, Charlie was trained in missile systems. His first daughter was born while he was in the military and her birth cost $2.57--they had to pay for the meals! He left the Air Force in 1967 and bought a house in Thousand Oaks, CA. He was a mechanical engineer down there, and then worked for the city for 13 years. Later Charlie worked for the cities of Pismo Beach, Paso Robles, and retired from the City of Marina in 2005. Charlie and Linda were happy to retire in Scotts Valley. His grandfather was one of the founders of Mt. Hermon and they still have a family home there. Charlie hosted a club breakfast at his family home a few years ago. Charlie said being a Rotarian is very important to him. Charlie and Linda is an elder in the Presbyterian Church. He says the service projects at Mt. Hermon and his volunteer projects in the church are some of the most rewarding part of his life. Linda and Charlie have been married for over 40 years and have 11 grandchildren! Charlie lives the clubs motto—Service above self!
