Pierre Senechal is the Mayor of Givenchy en Gohelle, the French Municipality where the Vimy Memorial and the "Chemin des Canadiens" are located. Pierre has accepted to put on the "Chemins des Canadiens" one of Dianne's Ping Pong table. The Chemin des Canadiens is the road the Canadian 85th Batallion, commanded by Major Percival Anderson, used to take Hill 145 (now the Vimy Memorial itself) on April 9 to 13 1917, creating for the first time a Canadian identity and Canada as a nation. Pierre Senechal's intervention will be the first Skype connection for our club. During Pierre's intervention, the logistics of Dianne's Ping Pong table shipment will be organized.

Kabul University Cardiac Research Institute
Aug. 18, 2016
Dr. Naebkhil is the founder of the Kabul Medical University Cardiac Research Institute in Afghanistan. This is an "against all odds" story where he returned to Afghanistan after 25 years in Canada and bootstrapped the centre, using an abandoned women's dormitory plus donated equipment that the Rotary Club of Windsor helped him secure and ship to Afghanistan. They operated for a few years on a shoestring, providing basic cardiac care to all comers at no charge. Then President Karzai got wind of their successes and provided government funding to provide capital for equipment and operating funds for salaries. Today the institute has more than 200 staff including 22 cardiologists and is serving thousands of patients. |

One Immigrant's Journey to Canada and Calling Toronto Home
Aug. 25, 2016
Each year Canada welcomes an average of 250 000 immigrants. Traditionally, most immigrants were attracted to the west in search of opportunities for better education, better jobs, and ultimately a better future. Upon arrival in Canada, many feel that the hardest part of their new beginning is behind them. But how does the new immigrant find her way around Toronto? Navigating the city, with its complex transportation systems, miles of paths, parks and ravines, and a plethora of ethnic neighbourhoods - all marked by ubiquitous signing - can be a daunting experience. On August 25, come share the experiences of one such immigrant and join her in her journey of discovery. Shermeen Beg completed her undergraduate degree in architecture in Pakistan, and her Masters in Architecture at the Savannah College of Art and Design. She has since worked in architectural firms in Washington DC, Karachi and Islamabad, before settling in Rome where she lived for over 3 years. Upon her return to Pakistan in 2007, she established her own architectural practice and was invited to teach art and architectural history at the University of Karachi. She went on to become a permanent faculty member at the Indus School of Art and Architecture. She has published several articles based on her extensive travels and the architectural treasures visited along the way. Since moving to Toronto, Shermeen has been active in the cultural community, working on events like Open Doors Toronto and Nuit Blanche. She is currently a teacher at the Aga Khan Museum and the Life Institute at Ryerson University. |
