Rotary Meeting 
February 12, 2024 
Don’t miss the Rotary Four-Way speech contest on Monday, Feb. 12. Students from Sci Tech High School and John Harris High School have selected topics that are important to them and will apply the Rotary Four-Way test to their perspective. Speeches are 5-8 minutes in length and will be scored by our super judges – Fox43 Reporter, Cyera Williams, Joshua Group Executive Director, Jeannette Politis, and Rotary Club of Harrisburg Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Chair, Vlad Beaufils. The winner will advance to the mid-level district competition and compete against other student winners from Rotary District 7390. Come support these outstanding students and see the Rotary Four-Way test in action!
 
STUDENT & TEACHER of the QUARTER 
  Awards will be presented before the Four-Way Speech Contest
 
The Rotary Club of Harrisburg will award a $2,000 Scholarship to eligible high school seniors who attend each of the following high schools: John Harris, Harrisburg SciTech, Steelton Highspire. An additional scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior attending either Harrisburg School District’s Virtual Learning Academy or Cougar Academy.

  • Susan Anthony introduced: Joanne Troutman (Feature Speaker) guest Craig Gittens Director of Community Treatment center at Youth Advocates Program, Inc. (YAP)
Introduction of New Members:
  • New Member orientation today, led by Meghan Bachmore
    • New Members who were at orientation today, Ana Myers, Sam Sweet, Gedeon Mudacumura and Belco expanded their membership w three new Corporate Members, Christie Thompson, Denise Burge and Laura Kennedy
  • If you want to join a new member orientation to share your experience, please let me know
  • Ellen introduced the zoom room, Betty Hungerford shares a few words.

  • Tony Mark shares more information about the 4 way speech- 4 incredible kids will be speaking on a topic of their interest, next meeting Feb 12. Thank you, Jenetta and Vlad, and Fox 43 Reporter, Cyera Williamsto who will be judging looking forward to it
  • Student and Teacher of the quarter award being presented Feb 12 meeting
  • Char announces about the environmental award, each year the committee gives out one award, requires 3 judges.  7 kids to present their exhibit.  We need more judges to help us out- reach out to Char are you are interested. Ellen stated the Rotary club awards $1000 award.

Ryan Unger to introduce Featured Speaker: Joanne Troutman, COO Youth Advocates Associates, Inc
Summary: Joanne Troutman is the COO of Youth Advocates Program Inc., a Harrisburg-based national nonprofit providing community services as alternatives to youth incarceration, residential care and neighborhood violence. Founded in 1975, YAP partners with youth justice, child welfare, behavioral health and public safety systems in 35 states and Washington D.C. The YAP headquarters as of May, 2023, at the former Pennsylvania News Media Association building on North Front Street is home to 108 human resources, finance and training employees who support the organization's frontline staff providing services to 17,800 individuals and families across the United States.
  • It’s one of the best kept secrets in Harrisburg, maybe even in PA
    • 25M grant from the Ballmer Foundation allowed them to invest in the building they currently are in
    • Mission - provide alternative to incarceration
    • They serve at-risk kids in the community
    • Teach kids how to engage in the community
  • What makes YAP different- hire people who have lived experience, we have hired advocates in neighborhood and community
  • Joanne joined YAP in July 2023
  • YAP celebrating it’s 50th anniversary in 2025
  • Over 2000 employees across the company, throughout 35 states
  • 17,800 families served- vast majority of people served are men of color
    • The ages are typical between 14-17
  • We are really good at what we do, 50% of our work is behavioral health
  • Core function is to provide a high impact social justice program, giving back, teamwork, corporate and clinical integrity, and community based care
  • Advocate Model- work in home and school community, implement family plans etc.
  • Services- include Child Welfare, Safety, Youth Justice, school etc
  • Addressing a child’s root cause problem and matching them up w an Advocate that a best fit for the child
  • Creating economics opportunities
  • Hand-off to Craig Gittens to share a few words: We focus on building relationships- we accept these kids at their worst to make them feel their best. We make a difference- changing one life at a time.  Prevention is key. I did not choose this job- this job chose me- we are making a difference.
