 Rotary International's new monthly theme for April is Maternal and Child Health! Every day mothers risk their lives giving birth and millions of children die each year from treatable, preventable causes. At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, Rotary provides immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improves access to essential medical services, and supports trained health care providers for mothers and their children. Rotary’s projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of health care training programs. Maternal and Child Health Care is also recognized as one of Rotary’s Six Areas of Focus. Sunrise & Noon Rotary will hold an evening meeting on March 25th, 2013 from 5:00 pm –
7:00 pm at the new Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA). Grand Opening is April 6th,
2013, so we are getting a "sneak preview". Meet the new executive director
Laurie Winters. There will be hors d'ouevres, cash bar, and socializing with
other Rotarians along with tours. Guests are welcome. If you have

The West Bend Noon Rotary will begin holding a social gathering meeting the first Thursday of the month at the Riverside Brewery from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm starting February 7th, 2013. This once a month meeting will replace our regularly scheduled Monday noon meeting on the first Monday of the month. The Thursday evening meeting will be counted as our regular weekly meeting for all members to attend and attendance will be counted as if it were a regular meeting, although it will be more social/networking in nature. Attendance would be needed to maintain perfect attendance. Members always can have make-ups or attend committee meetings, Board meetings, or Waterway meetings which count as make-ups. Spouses, significant others and any potential new members are welcome to attend as well. These after hour social/networking meetings are a new trend that is taking place among Rotary clubs, and the West Bend Noon Rotary is trying them out as well. 2015-16 Rotary International President K. R. "Ravi" Ravindran and his spouse, Vanathy, on stage during the closing session and banquet at the International Assembly, San Diego, California, January 23rd, 2015. Ravindran is a business leader from Colombo, Sri Lanka, and will will be the 105th president of Rotary International starting in July 2015. His theme for the 2015-2016 Rotary year is "Be a gift to the world." Frank W. Bucklin, West Bend Noon Rotary First President 1925-1926 The Rotary Club of West bend was organized Thursday, April 30th, 1925. The Hartford Rotary Club sponsored the West Bend Rotary Club and Seventeen Hartford Rotarians assisted in the organization. The West Bend Pilot at the time reported that the club would begin with a charter of 20 members and was created to be active in the betterment of business, city and state and will follow a good constructive program. Rules at the time stated only one member representative was allowed from each business, profession or manufacturing plant in the West Bend area. The club met once a week every Wednesday at noon. The Officers who were elected are as follows: President - Frank W. Bucklin Vice President - Bernard C. Ziegler Secretary - Henry O. The Rotary Flame has traveled around the world to #endpolio and arrived at Rotary International’s World Headquarters in Evanston, IL. on 4/14/15. The Rotary Flame started in India and has visited 9 countries to raise awareness and funding for polio eradication. By the end of the Rotary Flame’s journey, slated for the RI Convention in Sao Paolo, Brazil on June 6, it will have traveled to 12 locations, including Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan, the three countries still affected by polio. The continued fight to eradicate polio gets an additional $34.8 million boost from Rotary in support of immunization activities and research to be carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The funds will be used by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF for polio immunization, surveillance and research activities in ten countries, as well as to provide technical assistance to additional countries in Africa. |

Does your Rotary Club want to make a difference in either your local community or in the Global community during 2015-2016? Could your Club use financial assistance of District Designated Funds (DDF) to make that difference? Has your club given the qualifying $1,000.00 to the Rotary Foundation at least for the last 2 years?
Plan now to be at the Grant Management Seminar to learn about District and Global Grants. Be informed on the application steps. Make sure to have your club represented at the annual Grant Management Seminar (GMS) Training, if no one representing your Rotary Clubs attends – the club cannot apply for Grants.
Only 2 sessions will be offered for the 2015-16 Rotary year.

On February 23rd, 1905, the first four Rotarians pictured above -- Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram Shorey, and Paul P. Harris, gathered in Chicago for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting. The Rotary name is derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. Since Rotary International became the world's first service club organization, they have come along way with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas worldwide. Since the first donation of $26.50 in 1917, the Rotary Foundation has received contributions totaling more than $1 billion. Rotary continues to flourish today with its primary motto being "Service above Self". The stated purpose of the organization is to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

The nominating committee has chosen Jeff Reed as the District Governor Nominee for District 6270 for 2017-2018.
Jeff is completing his third year as an assistant governor serving clubs in the Fond du Lac, Neenah Menasha, and Oshkosh areas. Jeff joined Rotary in 2000 and was President in 2009-10. He has served as Club Secretary, Vocational Chair, Silent Auction Chair, Scholarship Chair, Membership Chair, and Micro-Loan site visit team member to Irkutsk, Siberia, Russia. He follows in the footsteps of his father, George Edward Reed, who served as club President in Maryland D-7630, and his brother, George Philip Reed, who has served as both club President and Assistant Governor in Maryland D-7630.
Jeff is Professor of Management at Marian University and has served as Dean of the School of Business at Marian University. Jeff and his wife Sylvia, Director of Institutional Research at Marian University, live in Fond du Lac. Their son, Daniel, is a graduate student at the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR.
Jeff has demonstrated his leadership ability as assistant governor and will be an excellent addition to your district leadership team. Please give him your support and join me in congratulating him on this new adventure!

GARY C.K. HUANG, Taipei, Taiwan President, Rotary International, 2014-15 Trustee, The Rotary Foundation, 2004-06 Vice President, Rotary International, 2001-02 Director, Rotary International, 2000-01 Gary C.K. Huang was born in southern China and grew up in Taiwan. He is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University, U.S.A. and holds an MBA from the College of Insurance (New York). He is currently Honorary Chairman of Taiwan Sok Shinkong Security Co., Ltd. He is a past president of the Malayan Overseas Insurance Co. Gary has been awarded the National Civic Service Award by the Federation of Non-Profit Associations and the Outstanding Community Service Award by the Ministry of Interior, R.O.C. In 2001, he was named “Honorary Mayor” by the City of San Antonio during Rotary’s convention. A Rotarian since 1976, Gary is a member of the Rotary Club of Taipei, Taiwan. He has served RI as district governor, director and vice-president, Trustee of The Rotary Foundation, and as chairman and member of numerous international committees and task forces. He has been instrumental in the area of membership development throughout Asia. As a Rotary Foundation Trustee, he set the goal of recruiting 100 new Foundation Major Donors in Taiwan to help celebrate Rotary’s centennial, which resulted in 106 Major Donors in 2005 and another 103 Major Donors in 2006 contributing more than US$2 million to the Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund. Gary has recounted his experience in business and his life within Rotary in a 2004 book entitled Finding Solutions, Not Excuses. He is a recipient of the RI Presidential Citation and the Service Above Self Award, Rotary’s highest honor. He also received the Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award. Gary and his wife Corinna have one son and two daughters. They are all major donors to The Rotary Foundation. |

Enchantment in the Park wrapped up a succesful run through the holiday season. Thanks to all those who came and visited. Also, thanks to all those who helped out as volunteers. We really appreciate all your help and couldn't have done it without all the extra help. The West Bend Noon Rotary hosted their World Affairs sponsored students at the August 20, 2012 club meeting. The students shared their experiences from the seminar with the group. The World Affairs Seminar gives students an opportunity to build leadership skills, collarobrate with their peers and to be one of the leaders who shapes the world of tomorrow. The seminar was held June 16-22, 2012 at Carroll University in Waukesha, WI.

The West Bend Noon Rotary celebrated two new Paul Harris awardees and the changing of the guard at its annual Paul Harris Awards Dinner on Monday, June 25. The Paul Harris Fellow distinction, in honor of the founder of Rotary, is in recognition of members who graciously give to The Rotary Foundation. Members acknowledged at Monday’s event include Ken Pesch and Betsy Guild. Ken has contributed to The Rotary Foundation for 20 consecutive years. Betsy received an Honorary Paul Harris Fellow on behalf of The Rotary Foundation for her continued commitment to the club and services to the community. As part of the changing of the guard, Betsy Guild, past president, turned over the gavel to Tom Bozewicz, club president. Tom will serve as West Bend Noon Rotary's 88th President. In addition, Rick Steiner was awarded Rotarian of the Year for his dedication to the club and significant contributions in the community. West Bend Noon Rotary's 22nd Annual Seafood Fest was a great success! A big thank you goes out to all those involved including the volunteers who put in long hours to help out in whatever ways were needed. Likewise, we thank the local community for dropping by and spending time with us over the 3 day weekend June 1-3. The weather was great. The rain held off! The entertainment was awesome and the food was fantastic! Normally held on the first weekend of June in Regner Park, this three day festival is the major fundraiser for the Noon Rotary’s Waterways Foundation. With everyone's help, we can do wonderful things for the West Bend community. We tried new things this year and hope the changes were well received, but we always like to hear from our guests. Any feedback, advice and suggestions are always welcome. We want to continue to make Seafood Fest a successful and popular event for the local community for years to come! |

The first annual West Bend Noon Rotary's Cake Wars was held this past Friday night, May 18th, 2012 at the West Bend Mutual Prairie Center. The event was an overwhelming success! The night actually ending in a tie, with Hankerson's and Sweet Creations garnering the same number of votes.

The West Bend Pilot at the time reported that the club would begin with a charter of 20 members and was created to be active in the betterment of business, city and state and will follow a good constructive program. Rules at the time stated only one member representative was allowed from each business, profession or manufacturing plant in the West Bend area. The club met once a week every Wednesday at noon.  The West Bend Noon Rotary Club will be hosting a Cake Wars Friday May 18th at the Prairie Center in West Bend Mutual Insurance Company. The event is scheduled to help raise funds and public awareness about Polio. The contest is scheduled from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. When guests arrive, they will receive a ballot for voting. They will then have an opportunity to try each cake and vote on their favorite choice. Votes will be tallied at 7:45 pm and a winner selected! On February 23rd, 1905, the first four Rotarians pictured above -- Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram Shorey, and Paul P. Harris, gathered in Chicago for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting. The Rotary name is derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. The Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee’s 34th consecutive entry in the Tournament of Roses Parade proudly celebrates the work of Rotarians worldwide. The theme of the 2012 parade is “Just Imagine” and the theme of our float is “Inching Toward the End of Polio.”
The Rotary Rose Parade Float won the Princess' Award for Most Beautiful Entry under 35 feet in length. And what a beautiful float it was! In case you missed it, the float and wonderful commentary can be found here on this video on YouTube.

The West Bend Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department has been very fortunate to receive a number of State and National Awards over the past two years. The biggest reason for this has been the enthusiasm of their residents and community partners. They formally recognized some of their community partners at the January 9th, 2012 Common Council meeting. One of those recognized community partners was the West Bend Noon Rotary Club for their contributions towards the Regner Park Splash Pad. The attendance at the Regner Park beach the last couple of Summers has been at its highest level in over 25 years. The West Bend Noon Rotary Club appreciates the recognition and looks forward to a continued partnership with the city of West Bend! |

On October 17th, the West Bend Noon Rotary Club was visited by District Governor Nancy Rhoades and Assistant District Governor Brian Monroe. They met with the Board of Directors and Club Officers and inquired how things were going and complimented the club on how well things have gone the last year. They also asked questions to learn more about our club. After lunch, they met with the whole club and shared with us what's new in Rotary and what we can expect in Rotary in the future. It was a nice opportunity to meet with officials from the District and learn more about the big picture of Rotary International!

Aaron is the son of Dirk and Debra Drews. Aaron is involved with Debate, Boy Scouts where he obtained the rank of Eagle Scout, Model UN, Key Club Treasurer, Interact, National Honor Society and French Club. Aaron plans to attend UW Madison or Northwestern University. He hopes to acquire an undergraduate degree in both French and International Relations with a minor in Linguistics. For potential careers, Aaron is looking into working in an embassy and eventually as a diplomat for the US Government. Another interest of Aaron's is working as a linguist for the United Nations.

State Representative and Fellow West Bend Noon Rotarian Pat Strachota, spoke to the club on Monday, October 4th. The topic was the 2011-13 Wisconsin State Budget. Pat explained the key elements of the $66 Billion - 2 year budget. The presentation was very informative and helped explain the complexities of how the state budget works and how the taxpayers money is appropriated. Members of the West Bend West High Schools' International service club Interact took part in a "Hike For Haiti" around West Bend to promote awareness for an internationally recognized dance troupe from Haiti that was performing at the West Bend High Schools auditorium Thursday, September 22nd. West Bend Noon Rotarian Karen Rice, an Interact advisor, joined students on the hike. Rice bubled with pride over the possible future Rotarians. "Interact has raised thousands of dollars through their fundraisers," she said. The Interact Club is in its third year and is sponsored by West Bend Rotary clubs - the adult international service organization. The World Affairs Seminar is a District 6270 Rotary initiative that draws over 400 students form all over the world for a week long intensive study of a topic which has global impact. It is held yearly in June at Carroll University. Nikol Schuster is our club sponsored outbound student who will spend her exchange year in Argentina. Steve Machery was the past president of Interact for two years. Students who have an interest in global issues and are in good academic standing and who have completed their sophomore, junior, or senior year prior to the Seminar are encouraged to apply. ShelterBox are continuing to monitor the effects of Hurricane Irene and preparing to assist wherever the need is the greatest. Wednesday morning Irene was centered about 335 miles southeast of Nassau in the Bahamas and was moving west-northwest near 9mph. It had already wrought destruction across the Caribbean, giving a glimpse of what the storm might bring to the Eastern Seaboard. In Puerto Rico, more than a million people were without power. One woman died after trying to cross a swollen river in her car and at least hundreds were displaced by flooding in the Dominican Republic, forced to take refuge in schools and churches.

The weather was just perfect for a late Summer get together for family and friends to kick back and relax. The band Andrea And The Mods entertained the crowd and were well received. The West Bend Noon Rotary Club made a commitment in 2007 to pledge $75,000 to the Museum of Wisconsin Art for the construction of its new building. The new museum is now getting closer to breaking ground, and the West Bend Noon Rotary is excited to be a part of the this wonderful organization which showcases the finest examples of Wisconsin art from all timeframes. Police Officer Brenda Grinwald was awarded Police Officer of the Year by the West Bend Noon Rotary Club. Officer Grinwald has served more than five-years as a police oficer on the police department. "She is often the first officer to respond to the call of help by an officer on the street, is willing to relieve a dispatcher and if she is walking through the record section and sees a citizen waiting for help, she will stop and help. Brenda truly understands and delivers customer service."
Beginning her career as a Clerk in the records section of the department, she earned the necessary credentials to become an officer. She received her Criminal Justice degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and completed the State of Wisconsin's Basic Recruit School at the Milwaukee Area Technical College. |

The West Bend Noon Rotary Club was awarded the Presidential Citation for the June 2010 - June 2011 term by Rotary International for demonstrating Rotary's commitment to fellowship and service. Under the theme of "Building Communities, Bridging Continents", nominations were submitted according to a list of criteria and guidelines. Rotary International offers awards to recognize the efforts and contributions of both Rotarians and individual Rotary clubs. Rotary clubs are encouraged to focus on meeting the specific criteria to be eligible for the award. The West Bend Noon Rotary held it's annual Paul Harris Dinner at the West Bend Country Club on Monday, June 27, 2011. On a beautiful Wisconsin June evening, Rotarians and guests gathered to reminisce about the past year and talk about upcoming changes to the new year. Michael Miller passed the gavel on to Betsy Guild who will be the West Bend Noon Rotary's 88th President. Michael Miller served as President for the term June 2010 - June 2011. The Rotary International theme during his tenure was "Building Communities, Bridging Continents." Michael thanked the club for their efforts in the past year and was appreciative for everyone stepping up and helping out where needed. He went over the accomplishments of the club during the past year and spoke of his pride in serving as the Rotary President. Betsy Guild takes over as President for the term June 2011 - June 2012. The Rotary International theme for her term will be "Reach Within To Embrace Humanity." Betsy discussed what that meant to her and she talked about her excitement in her new role and looked forward to a new year with lots of challenges and changes on the horizon. Honorary Paul Harris Fellows were awarded to Mark Kurziak and Sharon Ziegler. This award is named in honor of the Rotary International founder, Paul Harris. In his honor, individual Rotary clubs choose a Paul Harris Fellow who meets high professional and personal standards set by the founder. The fellow is then honored at a dinner and receives a special certificate, a gold pin, and a gold medallion on a blue-and-gold ribbon. The Rotarian of the Year was awarded to Tom Bozewicz. Tom was the Vice President of the Club for the past year and takes over as the President Elect for the upcoming term. West Bend Noon Rotary's 21st Annual Seafood Fest was a great success! A big thank you goes out to all those involved including the volunteers who put in long hours to help out in whatever ways were needed. Likewise, we thank the local community for dropping by and spending time with us over the 3 day weekend June 3-5. The weather was great. Not an ounce of rain! The entertainment was awesome and the food was fantastic! Normally held on the first weekend of June in Regner Park, this three day festival is the major fundraiser for the Noon Rotary’s Waterways Foundation. With everyone's help, we can do wonderful things for the West Bend community. We tried new things this year and hope the changes were well received, but we always like to hear from our guests. Any feedback, advice and suggestions are always welcome. We want to continue to make Seafood Fest a successful and popular event for the local community for years to come! |

The West Bend Rotary Club was organized Thursday, April 30th, 1925. The Hartford Rotary Club sponsored the West Bend Rotary Club and Seventeen Hartford Rotarians assisted in the organization. The West Bend Pilot at the time reported that the club would begin with a charter of 20 members and was created to be active in the betterment of business, city and state and will follow a good constructive program. Rules at the time stated only one member representative was allowed from each business, profession or manufacturing plant in the West Bend area. The club met once a week every Wednesday at noon. The very first West Bend Rotary sponsored Seafood Fest was held June 14-16, 1991. The idea for Seafood Fest came from a Rotary Club in Marquette, Michigan. West Bend Rotary members traveled to the Marquette, MI to see how their Fest was run and were impressed. The idea was then implemented here in West Bend and the rest is history! The need for a fund-raiser stemmed from a decision made 7 years prior to the start of Seafood Fest to help preserve West Bend's wetlands and natural waterways. The West Bend Rotary group emphatically decided to lend a hand to the second phase of the Riverwalk expansion project and pledged $110,000 to do so. There was initial apprehension regarding the organization of an event this size, but outstanding turnouts for the 3 day event left organizers pleased with the results. Even with a fair amount of rain on the first night, many people dropped by Regner Park to see what all the excitement was about. By all measures, the event was deemed a success. All told, 875 lobsters were sold over the course of the event. Seafood Fest continues on today and is as popular as ever. This year's event is scheduled for June 3-5, 2011. This is the West Bend Noon Rotary's largest annual fundraiser. The proceeds from this 3-day event primarily fund the Waterways Foundation. |
