SPEAKER: Monique Hammond

“What Did You Say? Or Can You Hear Me?

Our speaker and author of the fore mentioned book was a registered pharmacist who lost hearing in her left ear – from a loud band - at a church fundraiser 10 years ago. The incident became a life-changer – she had to quit her job at the University Hospital Pharmacy. After losing hearing, she did 5 years of research and wrote the book: What Did You Say? An unexpected Journey into the World of Hearing Loss (now in the 2nd Edition). Monique was appointed by the governor to the Commission of Deaf, Blind and Hard-Of-Hearing Minnesotans, where she completed two terms as vice-chair. She is also the past president of the Twin Cities’ Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America.

As part of her presentation she focused on the preventative approach to hearing loss. Of the 8 reasons, people lose their hearing aging and excess noise are one and two. We can't stop aging but we certainly can try to control the volume of the noise we are exposed to. Loud quick notices like firecrackers are an example most devastation along with earplugs worn incorrectly. She reminded us the hearing loss is not just for the aging: 1 0ut of 5 ( 12 year olds), 1 our of 3 (60 year olds), and 1 out of 2 (70 year olds). She confirmed ever hearing even with hearing aids is limited by all the background noise taken in. The most devastation outcome of hearing loss in miss communication.

SPEAKER THANKER: Ross Peterson drew the speaker to a close noting that in her honor we were donating to the Disaster Relief Shelter Box program.
