Late Breaking News – This Week’s Meeting Has Been Cancelled. Further Details To Follow By E-Mail.

Happenings at the last meeting

This week we had Kent Stannard as our guest speaker. Kent is a marine scientist who specialises in the White Pointer sharks that inhabit southern and south eastern Australia.

After 15 years working in Biology and Science with organisations such as the CSIRO Kent then moved into Public Safety focusing on the White Shark habitat and distribution.

Victoria holds one of the White Shark nurseries, running from Wilsons Promontory through to 90 Mile Beach, although the “teens” tend to congregate at Port Stevens.

There are two genetically different populations of White sharks, the Easter and Western. They don’t congregate or mate and are pretty much divided by Wilsons Prom. The Eastern population move up the east coast following their prey and providing a regulated body temperature which allows their movement.

Some of the sharks that Kent tracks and studies can be up to 80 years old. He showed us a number of trackers that are used on the sharks. They range in size and lifespan and can be attached to or inserted into the sharks. When the sharks surface the trackers unload data to surface stations and this data is accumulated to show the movement and congregation of sharks.

Kent goes out on shark capture expeditions at regular intervals during the year and they are now developing DNA and genetics tracking of the various populations.

Kent fielded a number of questions from the members who all showed quite an interest in the subject to the point where it is likely Kent will be asked to put in a repeat “performance” once the larger membership is back into face-to-face meetings.

After thanking Kent for his time, Harry continued with the usual Meeting format and mentioned an announcement from Peter Rawlings about a fund raiser for the Rotary End Polio Now project.

Here is the e-mail from Peter:

“Good morning Peninsula Cluster Presidents and hope all are well.
A further update on our planned Cluster Movie Night.
Further news from David Croad, General Manager, Peninsula Cinemas;
  • We have the green light to go ahead with your screening from the film company
  • The only hurdle now is the Cinema capacity limits .
  • At present the limit is 1 per 4 sq metres which means 167 patrons across 3 cinemas which is not much .
  • Hopefully capacity limits will change once we are fully open, we just don’t know when and how many
We should find out hopefully more today in relation to revised cinema restrictions.
I have set up a HUMANITIX booking site and at this stage have allocated 30 tickets to each club. Some Clubs will need more – some less.
So if you are happy, then I can manage the consolidated bookings using this free booking system and the clubs can collect the money. Simple!
Then as we approach the event, I will advise you at least weekly of who is coming from your club and we can reconcile the payments to the cinema nearer the event.
One suggestion is that for those don’t wish to, or cannot attend the event, that they may still wish to donate between $10 to $20 to EPN through your club to help lift your club contribution.
So the online booking system is NOW OPEN and very simple to use, with two tickets sold so far – for my wife Lyn and I!!
I have also produced this attached flyer for inclusion in your bulletins and for circulation to your members, as you see fit. This includes the booking link as well.
Attendees will need to be double vaccinated.
Any questions please let me know!
Many thanks to you all, good selling and chat soon,”

Back to the meeting

Harry would like us all to participate in this unique opportunity.

Next it was announced that the previously scheduled Bunnings BBQ had been cancelled. Since then a new date was offered and a BBQ was held on Saturday 30th.

The next Market Day has been scheduled for 27th November and looks safe to go ahead. In addition, the council have agreed to us having a Twilight Market from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm on the 22nd December. This may also include carols with the singers substituting for our formal Carols By Candlelight.

Once again, Harry thanked all the attendees as this was another well attended meeting.
