Dear Rotary Club of Tucson,

As I mentioned at the past Wednesday’s meeting, I wanted to share with the Club the incredible, powerful and moving article on the plight of Holocaust survivor Edith Fox.  This story was printed in last Sunday’s Arizona Daily Star and was a reprint from a personal interview done with Fox by our fellow Rotarian, Nina Trasoff from a couple of years ago.

For many of us, we learned about the Holocaust in school or saw images of it in popular movies like “Shindler’s List”.  We all were taught that millions of Jews were killed by the Nazis through various inhumane means, but for me, it was rare to  hear FIRSTHAND from an actual survivor as they told their personal story.  This is why the recollection of Edith Fox’s story is so humbling.  You feel like you are living her life as she recounts atrocity after atrocity.  After witnessing everything she saw during her youth, it amazes me she was even able to go on with her life.  What was there to live for when everything and everyone has been eliminated from her life?

The story truly gave me pause and I hope you take the time to read it yourself.  It makes me all the more proud to be involved with such a humanitarian organization as Rotary International.  To think what we do in the world to help others also helps me hope that something like the Holocaust will never happen again.  Thank you Nina Trasoff for helping us to never forget…..

Yours in Rotary,
