Rotary Leadership Institute - Why You Should Attend
Time is running out to enhance your knowledge and improve your ability to lead your club to greatness. Tomorrow is the last day to register for RLI on Saturday, May 7th which will be held at the Holiday Inn in Peabody.

If your club cares about its future, it will want the best leadership possible.  This is an outstanding opportunity for each club to improve the Rotary knowledge of its key people and to be exposed to new ideas of leadership.  The exchange of ideas with other experienced Rotarians alone makes the courses worthwhile.

The district will reimburse the first member from each club who registers for RLI, so don't delay!

District is Sponsoring Membership and Public Image Campaigns
District Governor Dave has agreed to invest our remaining Membership and Public Image Budget back into the clubs! Over the next 1-2 months, we will be placing print and electronic ads to join YOUR Rotary club! The ads will be regional and name any club represented in the region, but it will direct readers back to the 7930 website to locate the club nearest them.

You don't have to do anything for this project, BUT it would be appreciated:

  1. Check your current image archives. I'm looking for some ACTION pics of OUR Rotarians, and ones that show membership diversity. Please do not rely on the RI stock images.
  2. If you have a specific contact or news outlet that you think works best for your community, please let us know.
You can send this information to rotary7930publicimage@yahoo.com.

Finally, we are happy to announce that the Membership committee has awarded 6 Mini Grants this year to: Peabody, Danvers, Manchester-Essex, Somerville, Belle Isle, and Swampscott. In addition, the Public Image Committee awarded 10 Mini Grants to: Saugus, Salem, Danvers, Ipswich, Swampscott, Reading, Belle Isle, Methuen, Peabody and Medford. We hope you were able to benefit from the investment! This number represented almost half the committees' budgets and we're thrilled to put it back into the clubs.

Hope to see you at the Assembly/Conference!

Artists Express Themselves with Chalk in Cambridge
Whether you’re an aspiring or accomplished artist—or perhaps someone who appreciates art as a dynamic vehicle for visual expression—you won't want to miss Cambridge Rotary Club's annual Chalk on the Walk event, May 1st. on Church Street, that rivals an Italian street painting festival.

Artist Bridget Foster Reed first learned about Chalk on the Walk eight years ago when she happened to notice an advertisement for the event during an eventful subway ride.  “My interest was immediately peaked.  I was convinced that it sounded a bit ephemeral, but also lots of fun.”  To prove her point, Bridget has participated in the annual Chalk on the Walk event almost every year since then.

“I’m always impressed that Chalk on the Walk uses art to bring people together to support important charitable causes.  It also appeals to a wide demographic, bringing together so many different people and art styles in such a creative way. “The Rotary Club members running the event reach out to participating artists with so much warmth. I think of them as embodying the true spirit of volunteering.”

In Favor of Joint Meetings...
This past week the Lynnfield Rotary Club hosted the Wakefield Rotary Club at their home location at the Sheraton Wakefield. The two clubs were educated about Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer and Reid's Ride, a project supported by the Lynnfield Club for years. The lunch provided a passionate informational session but it also provided more. As Past District Governor David Drislane noted, "We should meet more often with our neighbors." It was a good reminder to both clubs about collaboration and fellowship. With almost 40 in attendance, it was one of the biggest meetings for either club, and will hopefully become a more regular tradition.

Has your club met with another club? It might be a great way to spark a new idea, plan a new event or partner in a district or global grant. The possibilities are endless!

Ben Collins Turns 96 Years Young - Rotarian for 65 Years
People don’t stick with things very long nowadays. So it’s an unusual accomplishment when someone is a member of the same organization for 65 years.

And what better day to celebrate that than on his birthday!

Ipswich and Rowley Rotary held a party this morning to honor Ben Collins, former owner of Ipswich Ford and former president of the club.

Asked by Nat Pulsifer what birthday it was, Collins joked, “It’s the first one this year.” It’s actually his 96th birthday today as well.

The event saw Collins receive praise and congratulations from Ipswich selectmen, state Rep. Brad Hill, state Sen. Bruce Tarr and other Rotary clubs and officials.

As the certificates were presented, someone joked that he would need a truck to bring the pile home.

Collins thanked the group. Speaking of his years of service with Rotary, he added, “I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

District 7930 in the May Rotarian
In the May issue of The Rotarian you will find a couple of references to District 7930. The first occurs in the Upfront calendar page, where the Rotary Club of Cambridge has their "Chalk in the Walk" event is listed. This May 1st event allows artists to create masterpieces on squares sponsored by local businesses and individuals. Donations provide funding for college scholarships and other club projects throughout the year. In one of the feature stories, our own Christa Papavasiliou was interviewed about what millennials love about Rotary. Her call-out quote stated "There's a real beauty to the underlying message of Service Above Self. I know there are going to be people in Rotary who are like-minded and like-hearted." The two other young Rotarians also had something important to hear. Jermaine EE exclaimed "The truth is, Rotary has everything millennials want." Finally, Yvonne Kwan confirmed why Rotarians are engaged in the service we provide in her quote - "Millennials are looking for a place to give back to their community, but they need to feel like they are getting value as well." The question is whether their concept of value returned is the same as our current members. Perhaps they are referring to the good feeling you receive from serving others, but maybe it is more. This important conversation can begin or be expanded by reading this article and discussing it at an upcoming club meeting.
