District 7930

District Installation
June 30, 2016

Homelessness and Hunger seems to have struck a chord!
The Homelessness and Hunger Initiative, started under DG Dave Manzi and continuing on for the next three years has become a popular theme for District 7930 Clubs. President-elects throughout the District have stated in their installation speeches that this will be their focus in the coming year.

The District, under Dave Manzi has accomplished a lot in a few short months. We’ve produced an amazing video, the link to which is in the left column of the District Website. We also packed 30,000 meals at the EndHungerNewEngland food packaging event at the Non-Profit Center in Boston during the District Conference. Simultaneously, food packaging was occurring in Lynn, a joint project with other civic organizations, and in Ipswich, where the Ipswich Interact Club worked with the Ipswich Lions Club to package meals as well. The total meals packaged for either local or international consumption on May 14 was around 60,000 meals.

High School Students Teach Lynn Rotarians
The Rotary Club of Lynn recently hosted a group of 10 Lynn Classical High School student refugees, as well as the students’ teachers, at its evening Satellite Club meeting. The program’s title, Living in Two Worlds Film Festival, came about thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Cummings Foundation, examines the challenges, hardships but also the rewards of life as teenagers now living in America and attending public schools. Each of the 10 students shared their stories in a three-minute video narrated by the individual student.

“I think I can speak for all our Rotarians when I say we were in awe as to how brave these students and their families were to make the decision they made to leave their homeland,” remarked President Ray Bastarache. “The horrors they have seen at such young ages…”

Rotary Night at Fenway
If you like offensive baseball, this may be the year to go to a Red Sox game. The team's batting average is just below .300 and they are tearing up their competition. Even the pitching is beginning to improve. Tied for first in the AL East, now is the time to register to go to the Rotary Night at Fenway on July 8th.

The district has reserved 280 seats in the right field grandstands hopefully to witness a win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Joining us will be 50 plus members of the Ipswich Rotary Club and their twin club from Ipswich, England. That leaves about 230 seats for Rotarians, family and friends. This will be a gorgeous night, not guaranteed, but being their with so many incredible people will certainly be amazing.

Rotary Fellowships: Mixing passion, friendship, and service
Friendship is one of the top reasons members join and stay in Rotary. To boost these ties, Rotary Fellowships offer members, spouses, and Rotaractors the chance to connect with one another while enjoying their favorite recreational or professional pursuits. Over 60 Rotary Fellowships cover interests from tennis to wine, marathon running to cooking, scuba diving to recreational vehicles, jazz to computers, and more.

Rotary Fellowships arrange regional and international events, contests, and meetings where members bond and build lasting friendships outside their clubs, districts, and even countries. June is Rotary Fellowships Month, so make sure to read our Rotary Service Connections blog to learn how several fellowships combine fun and friendship with service. By connecting Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni with shared interests, the fellowships extend the Rotary experience beyond local communities.

Lynn Students Share their RYLA Experience
“Right up until the night before I was to leave,” admitted Lynn English junior Evelyn DeLeon, “I was asking myself, what did I sign up for? I got a phone call from Jose (Jurado) who said to me, ‘you have to go because you talked me into going’. I  figured- what the heck!”

Meaghan, a freshman at English, heard about RYLA from her guidance counselor and while she didn’t have a clue what it was all about, when she heard she might learn some leadership skills, she was all for it. Evelyn, the lone Classical student to attend RYLA thanks to the generous financial support she received from the Ipswich Rotary Club, found herself in a quandary.
