Simon Manning - District 9940 Probus Chair

Due to the size of the Newsletter it will be sent out to all members as an Email attachment.

Please take time to read it. It is full of wonderful stories of Probus activities and Simon is very keen  to encourage Rotarians and Probus members  to become more informed about what Probus is doing in our district..  A sample story is in 'read more' - Goat Trip -  an enjoyable excursion  for Palmerston North Terrace End Probus.

Goat Trip
Recently about 20 members of the Palmerston North Terrace End Probus Club visited a goat farm at nearby Opiki.
We saw over 600 milking goats all under cover in specially built sheds. They are milked twice a day. We observed the afternoon milking in a 40 a side herring bone shed. It took two women 3 hours to milk the dairy goats each session. The farm which once grew potatoes and onions now provides Lucerne, clover plantain grasses and hay for the goats.
The goats are all scanned to see if they are pregnant and how many kids they are carrying. The sonar radiographer works in a Radiology Clinic during the week and scans sheep and goats at the week end during
the season. The milk is chilled to 2 degrees centigrade, collected by milk tanker every second day and transported to Hamilton in the Waikato for processing into dried goat milk powder. Most of it is sold to China for infant formula. At the conclusion of a very interesting and informative afternoon we were given a small glass of goat’s milk to drink.
