Three members from our district had the privilege to join a RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) team to Solomon Islands recently. Alan Laughton (Kooweerup - Lang-Lang), Merv and Chris Williams (Mt Martha) were involved in fitting out a new Rural Training & Hospitality Centre at Mbanga Island.

This new venture is giving young Solomon islanders a second chance at school. These students had ‘failed’ their year 6 or year 8 test and therefore their schooling is usually finished. Through Rotary in partnership with Ausaid, Solomon Island Government and Skills for Economic growth these young people now have an opportunity to gain a trade and a better prospect to gain employment.

A team of 14 Aussies worked alongside the students to erect and line walls, ceilings and the veranda. The women removed and prepped windows and painted walls and ceilings of a school building. The women of the team also delivered 430 much needed and well received Days for Girls Kits to the female students.

A highlight for the team was seeing these young students grow in their skills and confidence as they worked alongside the team. For most of the students this was the first time they had used a power tool (supplied by Ausaid).
