Just recently I had the pleasure of meeting Wayne Morris from the Rotary Club of Honiara at the recent National Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) conference.. The great news is that the people in the Solomon Islands have really embraced the Healthy Villages Project. Wayne has received 81 new applications from villages to be involved in the Healthy Villages Project. So, a huge thank you to the many clubs who have already supported the Healthy Villages Project and there will be many happy people because of your support.

I found the RAM conference very informative. I was able to hear from scientists and specialists in the field of malaria and Rotary is definitely an important partner and support in malaria elimination. You may have read of the commencement of trials of a malaria vaccine in Africa. At this stage it is not projected to be the solution. However it may bring some good protection. The vaccine will be given to children under 18 months. There is a requirement of 3 doses with a 4th booster dose. This brings its own challenges in 3rd world countries. At the RAM’s conference we also heard from one of the Australian scientists working on a vaccine.

If you would like to donate towards the Healthy Village Project – please make cheque payable to Rotary District 9820 Healthy Villages. Post cheque to PO Box 242, Mount Martha 3934.
