The Global Grants Scholarship Committee of District 5890 has awarded a conditional $30,000 Rotary Scholarship to Gwendolyn (Gwen) Hummel for the 2024-2025 Rotary Year.

Gwen’s application is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lake Houston Area, which is contributing $1,250 towards her costs, and will now begin her application to the Rotary Foundation for final review and approval.

Gwen has Master’s Degrees from both the University of Wyoming, her home state, and Colorado State University, and is currently a third-year PhD student at Baylor College of Medicine.  She plans to attend the University of Western Australia in Perth on her scholarship and is interested in pregnancy and pre-term birth.  “Preterm birth (PTB) is the leading cause of infant death and early life disabilities and is responsible for 36% of deaths in infants under the age of 5.”

She has finished all course work for her PhD and will be enrolled at UWA for research purposes only in the Biomedical Sciences program.  She will be an active member of the School of Biomedical Sciences and is planning to attend and present in seminars and talks in the School of Biomedical Sciences, and workshops hosted by the King Edward Memorial Hospital Preterm Birth Prevention Clinic, the Western Australia Preterm Birth Prevention Initiative, and the Microbiome Consortium of Western Australia.  This will allow her to complete the final component of her dissertation.”

Thank you to the 1.4 million Rotarians around the world who contribute to the Rotary Foundation, which is helping to fund her future.

In August 2024, we will send all District 5890 Rotary clubs the application for the 2025-2026 Global Grant Scholarship.  Please reach out now to potential applications, and contact your former Interactors, RYLA Campers, and local universities to recruit individuals to apply to your club.

Best wishes,
