Community Service

Find out about what the Rotary Club of Edmonton West does in our community.

Edmonton's Food Bank

Edmonton West members volunteer regularly at the Food Bank warehouse. It is one of our favourtie places to work. We help with sorting, and are responsible for going through all non-perishable donations and checking the condition of the packaging and the best before dates. Once the food is checked, it is organized and stored appropriately to be brought to the hamper line or agency row.
Our Hamper Makers complete the food hampers by adding additional perishable and non-perishable food to the “Starter Kit”. At this time, special attention is paid to dietary requests as well requests for special items such as toiletries or dish soap based on availability. The volume of hampers must be recorded and hampers must be accurately labelled for delivery to the client and/or food depot.

Boyle Street Community Services

Boyle Street Community Services has been working in the inner city of Edmonton since 1971 to serve, support, and empower people to take control of their lives and escape the cycle of poverty and homelessness. In 1976, the organization became a registered charity under the name Boyle Street Service Society.
Our club has a close connection to this vital organization. We support their Thanksgiving and Christmas meals and our members volunteer to plate and serve the warm meal to their clients.

Grandview Concert Series

Edmonton West provides high quality entertainment to the residents of Capital Care Grandview from September to May. This entertainment usually involves musical programs arranged by Jerome Martin and Ingrid Neitsch. This program has been in place for many years and has included many famous Edmonton musicians and groups.

Wellspring Edmonton

Our club makes an annual donation to Wellspring. Many of us have also been through the volunteer training program at the centre and help with peer support and garden maintenance. A group of us have also helped with special events.

Hope Mission

Every day over 1700 hot meals on average are provided by Hope Mission in Edmonton, free of charge. Meals are served three times a day on weekdays and brunch and dinner on weekends.
It is a pleasure to volunteer in their well run kitchen and we are kept busy with meal prep. We then serve a warm and nutritious meal to the hundreds of people who use their services.

Root for Trees

The Root for Trees program helps to expand Edmonton’s urban forest by planting trees for Edmontonians by Edmontonians.

Our enthusiastic Edmonton West members, along with their families plant with Root for Trees a couple of times a year. Not only are we helping the environment, but we are also have fun and fellowship by working side by side.

Adopt a Highway

The Rotary Club of Edmonton West adopted a 3km section of Highway 16 in 2018. Our members and Rotaractors volunteer to pick up litter along the route twice a year.

395 Edmonton Air Cadet Squadron

This club has supported the 395 Squadron since 1983. The sponsor financially supports the activities of 395 air cadets. The Rotary Club has received the Top Sponsor Award from the Alberta Provincial Committee during it’s tenure with 395 Squadron.
Sponsoring Committees work in partnership with cadet corps and squadron staff to ensure the viability of the unit.  Their support is intended to complement the resources available from the Canadian Forces.  The responsibility for the sponsoring committees falls to the Air Cadet League – as their Supervisory Sponsor.

Purolator Tackle Hunger

Through our relationship with Edmonton's Food Bank we have volunteered at the Purolator Tackle Hunger Event since 2014.

At one of the Elks games during the season at Commonwealth Stadium, fans are asked to bring non-perishable food items, or make a donation (tap or cash) for the Food Bank. We help by volunteering around the stadium collecting food and monetary donations.

Edmonton West Daytimers

The Daytimers are a committed and enthusiastic group of retired members who love to do hands on projects in the community. We support many local organizations by helping with general maintenance, spring and fall clean up, carpentry projects and painting.

Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign

One of our Christmas traditions is to support the Salvation Army with their Christmas Kettle Campaign. We spend a Saturday in December jingling the bells to raise money for the community programs they provide.
