Lutheran Foundation’s Regional Collaboration on Mental Health
A healthy community is one that promotes positive physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The Lutheran Foundation is committed to building healthier communities by investing in organizations whose purpose is to address the root cause of health needs in our communities. According to Lutheran Foundation CEO Marcia Haaf, this commitment led the foundation over the past five years to see itself as an impactful investor looking at root causes of issues. Through its research the foundation discovered that less than 1% of dollars was being spent in a 10-county northeast Indiana area specifically on mental health. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 50% of lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14; 75% by age 24. Someone dies from suicide in the United States every 12.3 seconds. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in youth 15-24. Connected with this data is the significant use of opioids in Indiana, which leads all states in the number of pharmacy robberies. More than 1,150 Hoosiers died from drug poisoning in 2014, which represents a 500% increase since 1999.

In October 2013, The Lutheran Foundation completed a Mental and Behavioral Health Needs Assessment, the first study of its kind to analyze all aspects of mental and behavioral health for adult, adolescent and elderly populations within the 10-county region. According to Kristina Johnson, Director of Lutheran Foundation’s Community Initiatives, the results revealed that, in northeast Indiana, people of all ages struggle with mental, emotional and behavioral health issues. Many don’t have easy access to information and don’t know where to turn for help. Realizing a need for more resources, The Lutheran Foundation launched LookUp. This is a compassionate initiative designed to provide mental health information and reduce the stigma associated with issues such as mental, behavioral and emotional health and opioid dependence. Nearly everyone is touched by one of these issues at some point in their lives. To offer help and hope, LookUp hosts information and resources on some common health topics. Persons can click to contact assistance confidentially as well as call 800-284-8439 or text 494949. As noted on its website, by connecting those in need with life-saving resources, The Lutheran Foundation desires to deliver community-wide hope and healing.

John Hoffman, chair of our club’s World Affairs Conference Committee, reports that more than 200 high school juniors and seniors will take part, representing 16 area high schools.
