President Schuler:  We are moving into our second century of service
New club president Candace Schuler quickly demonstrated that she has fully embraced the workings – and future -- of the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne during her “State of the Club” address at the noon, August 1, meeting at Parkview Field.

“Last year, we began a six-week visioning process for our second century of service,” Schuler said. “From those sessions, Club members listed several key areas of focus, which the new ‘Second Century of Service Planning Committee’ is studying.”  As the list below shows, the efforts are robust and encompass a broad spectrum of service … and a little fun.

  • Continue the partnership with Washington Elementary School: “We are clearly doing this by increasing the Washington School Committee budget, with the recent ‘Done in a Day’ landscaping work by new club members, and through the District (Rotary District 6540) grant to purchase T-shirts for the back-to-school picnic for Washington students and new students incoming this fall from Nebraska Elementary,” Schuler said.
  • Implement a high profile project for current riverfront renovations: A subcommittee of the Second Century of Service Planning Committee has been formed and has been investigating possibilities through meetings with city officials and the Riverworks development folks. The club should hear an update soon.
  • Help area youth in greatest need: We will soon have projects to discuss in this area.
  • Create a new signature fundraising project:  “This has been discussed for several years now,” Schuler said. “This year, we’re going to do something about it.” Once again, proposals will be coming before the club soon.
  • Have fun! Schuler acted upon this edict quickly by appointing Allie Braun as chair of the new “FunMeister Committee.”  Braun and Schuler welcome your “fun” ideas.  Schuler reminded meeting attendees that the club is already having quite a lot of fun as she lauded the creative and enjoyable “Happy Hours” planned by the Membership Committee.
  • Re-envision and reinvigorate the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne Foundation: Club members asked the board to re-examine the uses for our Foundation Funds.   Schuler said a special group is examining this issue and will soon present their recommendations to the club.

Schuler recounted the club’s successful centennial year of 2015 and the myriad of projects completed in honor of the milestone: erecting the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne Centennial Tower in downtown Fort Wayne, building a new middle school in Togo, West Africa, and installing 100 Little Free Libraries around the community. The latter project, which Schuler headed, includes 95 Little Free Libraries installed and another eight in the works.

Schuler thanked members of the club’s 30 committees for their steadfast work and commitment to Rotary, concluding, “I am honored and humbled to be your president and look forward to serving you in the coming year.”

Clearly the club’s future and leadership look very bright.

Great return on investment …
Each spring, the Cleo Fox Committee, headed by Chris Fountain, holds a contest to determine which instrumental music students should be awarded scholarships to attend summer music camp.

At Monday’s meeting, club members had a first-hand look at the “fruit of their investment.” One of the Cleo Fox scholarship winners, Allyn Beifus, tamed and mastered the marimba keyboard with her performance of “North Hampton,” by Gary Fieldman – and was rewarded with thunderous applause. The young virtuoso studies percussion and piano and attends Homestead High School.  She’s the daughter of past club president Dee Hoffman. See her presentaion on You Tube:  https://youtu.be/OyMNaAeRxMw

The Cleo Fox Scholarship is named in honor of a late club secretary and his love of music.

Paul Harris hat trick
Al Diefenbach was honored with a standing ovation for his third Paul Harris Fellow. Randy Rider, Chair of the Club’s Foundation Committee, explained a Rotarian earns a Paul Harris Fellow each time the person contributes $1,000 to the Rotary International Foundation.

Stahl is already active in the community, having volunteer leadership positions at Big Sisters/Big Brothers, Junior Achievement, the Charis House the United Methodist Church of Decatur and other groups. She also enjoys running and reading. Welcome to Rotary, Karen!

Speaking of new members …
Membership Committee co-chair Rick Zolman, reminds club members of these application procedures to become a member of the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne:
  1. Prospective member attends several meetings as a guest of a Rotarian.
  2. Prospect completes application for membership.
  3. One member who knows the applicant becomes the prospective member’s sponsor and signs the application.
  4. The completed and signed application is returned to the Club Secretary for review by the Membership Committee and the Board of Directors.
  • If necessary, the Membership Committee further “vets” the applicant.
  1. Board of Directors votes on the application, and if no further action is required, the application is presented to the entire membership through SPIN, the club bulletin, for final approval.
  2. Prospective member attends New Member Orientation.
  3. Once the prospective member pays his or her dues, the new member is introduced at a regular club meeting
Coming soon: Golf tourney, happy hour and new club charter event
Rotarians are active people, as these meeting announcements verify:
  • August 12 Washington Elementary Back-to-School Picnic: Washington Committee co-chair Lori Stinson asked for volunteers for the Friday, August 12, back-to-school picnic.  This annual event will be extra special this year – and requires more volunteers – as the event welcomes new students from Nebraska Elementary, which is being merged with Washington Elementary. With the help of a Rotary District 6540 grant, all students will receive a “Welcome to Washington” T-Shirt. So far about 100 new students have registered for Washington Elementary, with 514 parents and students registered for the picnic.  Lori and committee co-chair Julie Bobay would dearly welcome your assistance! Helpers will volunteer from 4:45 p.m. to 7 p.m., and will assist with setting up and arranging and serving food.
  • August 22 Golf Tournament: Tourney chair Jim Kratzat heartily invited members and friends to sign up for the August 22 Annual Golf Tournament at Autumn Ridge.  Cost is $88 per player. For only $20, non-golfers can join the gang for dinner. Look for more information soon about raffles, prizes and other details.
  • DATE: Rick Zolman announced the next member happy hour will take place August 17 at the Embassy Rooftop Garden. Summer Nights takes place in the Ballroom as well as the Parkview Health Rooftop. In the case of inclement weather, Summer Nights at the Embassy will halt access to the roof temporarily. Entertainment provided by Smooth Edge 2, Fort Wayne’s only contemporary a cappella and vocal jazz group
  • September 29 Summit City South Charter Event: Barb Wachtman invited fellow Rotarians to mark their calendars for the Chartering Event and Celebration of the new Summit City South Rotary Club, September 29, at Sycamore Hills Country Club. Launching the new club has been the joint effort of Rotary District 6540 erstwhile Membership Chair Dan Ryan, the Anthony Wayne Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne. Mayor Tom Henry will be on hand to congratulate the new club, as well as other area city and Rotary dignitaries.  Expect more details soon.
