Cody Stephens GBOGH Foundation
Aug. 27, 2015
Our own Scott Stephens will present information on the Cody Stephens Go Big or Go Home Foundation activities. On May 6, 2012, Cody Stephens was a few weeks from graduating from Crosby High School, and looking forward to showing his pig, steer and lamb at the Crosby Fair and Rodeo in June. He was also excited to be headed to Tarleton State University on a football scholarship, and working to stay in good physical condition to be prepared for college football practices. At 6’9″ and weighing 289 lbs, he seemed to be in perfect health, and had no idea that he had a fatal heart problem. On that Sunday afternoon, Cody came in, kicked back in his dad’s recliner, clicked the TV on, said he was tired and dozed off for a nap. He never woke up but died in his sleep, from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. This was something that we had never heard of and had no idea that young, seemingly healthy children were at risk of, with relatively few or no warning signs. The GBOGH website was created to share Cody’s story with others and do anything and everything we can, to raise awareness of this silent killer and help prevent other families from experiencing the loss and heartache that we know. |

HCSO/Boy Scouts-Explorer
Sep. 03, 2015
HCSO Deputy Sheriff Brian Goldstein will be our speaker for the September 3, 2015 club meeting. Goldstein is the advisor for posts 43 and 411 of the HCSO's Police Explorers program started by Sheriff Adrian Garcia in 2011. He will present an overview of this very successful program. The HCSO’s Police Explorers program is open to teenagers and young adults between the ages of 14 (must have completed the 8th grade) and 20 interested in a career in law enforcement. Student participants will get a first-hand look at what it takes to be a law enforcement officer and decide early on whether it is a career they want to pursue. The Explorers students will have the opportunity to train to perform certain police functions and utilize that training in mock police calls. They’ll also be able to showcase that training in Explorers competitions, held throughout the United States, and qualify to win awards and even college scholarships. The Sheriff’s Explorers program, which is a subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America and is affiliated with Learning for Life, will be led by two trained advisors in each district post and supported by HCSO civilian assistant advisors. “The Police Explorers program is a proven model and comes with a nationally respected brand of the Boy Scouts of America. The Police Explorers program is a great opportunity to educate and mentor our youth and expose them to the rewarding profession of community service and law enforcement. It’s also a great way for our youth and their parents to support law enforcement.” There are eight (8) Explorering posts within the HCSO, one assigned to each patrol district, including one (1) in the downtown Houston area. A complete list of those posts is listed under the ‘Contact Us’ Link. Harris County Sheriff's Explorers website link: http://hcsoexplorers.com |

Channel Industries Mutual Aid (CIMA) is a non-profit organization combining the fire-fighting, rescue, hazardous material handling and emergency medical capabilities of the refining and petrochemical industry in the Greater Houston Metropolitan area. Since 1955, this organization has been providing cooperative assistance and expertise for all kinds of emergencies - both natural and man-made. The CIMA organization was formed in 1955 under the name of the "Houston Ship Channel Industries Disaster Aid Organization". In 1960 the name of the organization was changed to "Channel Industries Mutual Aid" (CIMA) a non-profit corporation. Malaki Dads - Impact on Texas Prison Inmates & Families
Jan. 07, 2016
Born in Angola prison, one of the harshest prisons in America, Malachi Dads have taken it upon themselves to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to prisoners, knowing that God has the power to transform those society has given up on. Most of the men at Angola are serving life sentences, which is why it is so surprising to see them actively meeting with one another and reading the bible to ensure they become better men, better husbands, and better fathers. The fact they will never be getting out does not deter them, because they cherish the few moments they have with their children, moments they use to show their kids they have a father who loves them. Today, the Malachi Dads program has spread beyond the walls of Angola and into 28 prisons across the country, signaling a change in the culture, one where fatherlessness is rampant. According to the U.S Census Bureau, 24 million children in America – one out of every three – live in biological father absent homes. That’s more than 1.7 million children across the USA. And statistically those children are two to three more times likely to wind up behind bars themselves. Even though the Malachi Dads program has brought a great deal of families together throughout the U.S., there are still a large number of people who are reeling from the effects of not having an active father in their life, both children and prisoners. Fellowship Monrovia, taking notice of this issue, is partnering with Malachi Dads to ensure that even more prisoners have the opportunity to experience discipleship and grow in Christ. Fellowship Monrovia’s desire to be a part of this ministry began when the Head Pastor Albert Tate was invited to preach at an event in Angola Prison. Another individual who helped to set up this partnership was Rudy brown, who attends Fellowship and works in prison Ministries. After recommending and encouraging the church to get involved with Malachi Dads, Fellowship decided to do so after seeing the amazing transformation in the lives of the prisoners and their families. Brandon Spencer, the community life pastor, perfectly summarizes Fellowship Monrovia’s intentions, saying, “This is a great ministry where we practically get to take discipleship to a group of people who can’t come to us… to include this community of people who are outcasts, who are definitely pushed to the side.” For more information, visit the following website: http://heartoftexasfoundation.org/malachi-dads/ |
