Space Day: Solving Climate Challenges from Space
May 01, 2024
MethaneSAT On 4 March, 2024, MethaneSAT was successfully launched from Vandenburg Space Force Base, CA on a SpaceX Falcon-9 launch vehicle. MethaneSAT is the first satellite mission to be 100% donor funded with more than $80 million raised for the mission by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a non-profit organization. MethaneSAT’s goal is simple: to motivate and enable urgent action to reduce methane emissions. MethaneSAT will locate and quantify methane emissions from oil and gas operations almost anywhere on Earth and track progress over time. MethaneSAT will provide regular monitoring of regions accounting for at least 80% of global oil and gas production, measuring emissions over large areas and from specific sites. It will see concentration differences as small as three parts per billion and will quantify not only how much is escaping, but also how fast. Cutting Methane emissions now can rapidly slow global warming.
Ed Irvin, MethaneSAT Project Director Ed served over three decades at Lockheed Martin Space, including significant management roles on multiple remote sensing and telecommunication satellite system developments. He has extensive systems engineering, program management and international business development experience. Since 2016, he has operated as a consultant to several commercial startup companies. In 2018, he was recruited by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a non-profit organization, to lead the MethaneSAT Project. Ed and his wife, Julie, have lived in the Monta Vista area of Cupertino since 1994 and have 2 sons. |

Members from the Climate Action Committee have volunteered with Hunger at Home to support their food distribution at PayPal Stadium in San Jose. This is an excellent experience for each of us and a very worthy cause, and we have decided to participate the first Monday of each month. Hunger at Home collects food from many sources (grocery stores, stadiums, hotels, restaurants, etc) and distributes it to the needful in San Jose. The food packages include a box of fruit and vegetables, and packages of proteins, grains, canned food, nuts, cereal, etc. This is a great source for families in the area that are struggling financially.
Our role is to greet the recipients and provide them with instructions, then load the food into the vehicle. The recipients need to register ahead of time and are check-in upon arrival.
If you are interested in volunteering, navigate to this Google Sheet to sign-up ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pdvS2CxiEaZXRWGqcC6jBr3GrZD193Q-oMbszAkKgqA/edit#gid=0 ). Please click on the link to open the spreadsheet then enter your name and contact info on one of the volunteer lines for the upcoming month. There are 5 slots for the volunteers and a couple of slots for backup persons, should one of the volunteers be unable to make it.
The event occurs on the first Monday of each month from 8am-11am at PayPal Park in SJ (1123 Coleman Ave, San Jose). Wear casual clothes appropriate for the weather as this is an outdoor activity.
If you have questions, please contact Steve LeFevre (Steve.r.lefevre@gmail.com).
