It’s hard to believe that we have turned the calendar to March.  Ohio was gracious enough to welcome us into this new month with above normal temperatures and the early spring sun.  This warmer weather is a sure sign that garage sale season is approaching fast. Over the last couple of months emails have gone out to members regarding garage sale pick-ups and several volunteers have stepped up to help.  We are incredibly thankful to those who have volunteered their time, trucks, storage and helping with the communications.  Our annual Community Garage Sale will be held on June 4th, be sure to mark your calendars.

In addition to our wonderful community outreach projects we conduct throughout the year, we have decided to join up with Rollin' with Rotary’s “Rotary Random Acts of Kindness” challenge.  As promised, Rollin' with Rotary launched their first challenge on March 1 and challenged the Rotary Community to “Feed Somebody”.  Fellow Rotarian Rebecca Butler has offered to coordinate our Random Acts of Kindness efforts and will be making arrangements for us to stop by the Clothesline Outreach Program at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church.  Be sure to check back for more details on how you can help with our first challenge and when we will make our visit.

At last week’s meeting (Friday, March 4) Barry VanHoozen was kind enough to step up to the podium to be our Fine Master for the week.  Barry gave us a brief background of growing up on a farm and eventually making his way to Purdue University in Lafayette, IN.  In 1990 he became a State Farm Insurance agent and in 2014 he became a Perrysburg City Council Member.  Barry is very proud to be part of the Rotary Club of Perrysburg and gave a shout out to his “Rotary Dad” Jack Sculfort for helping him to get involved.

Our guest speaker for this past week was Judge Jack Zouhary.  Judge Zouhary became a United States District Court Judge in 2006 after being nominated by G.W. Bush.  Judge Zouhary gave us a great presentation on the how the U.S. District Court handles their specific trials and how the trails are appointed to certain Federal Courts.  In addition to the to the court room specifics, he also explained how the use of technology has helped to increase the efficiency of jury verdicts and has completely eliminated paper from the courtroom.

As we look ahead to this week, we will be welcoming Rick Johnson, the Vice President of Market Development at Clearas Water Recovery.  Mr. Johnson, Clearas and the City of Perrysburg have been involved in a pilot program in hopes to reduce the phosphorous and nitrogen levels in discharged water by using the Water Recovery Advance Biological Nutrient Recovery (ABNER) process.  Be sure to get there early for this very informative and educational meeting.

See you at Rotary!
