SPEAKER: Kieran Bhatia – Oct 24 - a Monday

Hurricane Impact in NY
Kieran Bhatia is a postdoctoral associate at Princeton University in their Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. He is affilliated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and is currently conducting research that aims to understand the sensitivity of hurricanes to climate, and the impact of hurricane changes on storm surge change.
Note that this meeting day is on a Monday - a change for this week only.

The last five years have been very active hurricane seasons for the northeast and especially New York. The state received significant damages from both Sandy and Irene, and both of these storms were not even hurricanes when they made landfall in the area. With sea level rise and climate change projections, it is highly likely that the hazards associated with hurricanes will only get worse. The goal of this talk will be to inform the audience about the more complicated forecast products shown to the general public during a hurricane forecast, convey when the highest chances are for a landfall for New York City, discuss impacts associated with hurricanes, and answer any questions posed by the audience. Hopefully, everyone will leave the room as more hurricane savvy citizens that are prepared for the next landfall.
Biography:
Kieran Bhatia received his PH.D in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography at the University of Miami in 2015. He is originally from the Washington D.C. area and received a B.S. in Physics from the University of Maryland at College Park. He is currently a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University where he is researching the flooding impacts of hurricanes in future climates.
