After an agonising wait of 906 days (2 ½ years), Erfan’s brother, wife and six children arrived last night at Adelaide’s International Airport after escaping Afghanistan’s Taliban rule and hiding in Pakistan to ensure their safety. It was a very emotional meeting when Wahad hugged his mother Sharifa and father Abdullah, the children and wives all hugged everyone, and then Wahad finally had the opportunity to embrace Erfan to thank him for all the hours, many hundreds of phone calls, extensive immigration paperwork and expenses to bring the family to Adelaide. A small contingent of Rotarians and Erfan’s friends were there to greet the family before they were transported to their new home.
Thanks to the Club’s Refugees Mentoring Committee – especially Katey, Paige and Kirsti (among others) – and the rest of the Community Services group for your efforts in helping to provide and move everything needed into Wahab and his family’s new home including clothing, furniture and household goods. Erfan been working extremely hard – taking on double shifts at work for the past few years – to help provide funds for his family’s transition into Australia, along with Erfan’s father Abdullah to pay for their accommodation and expenses in Pakistan. Rotary Adelaide Light assisted with the payment of the family’s flights to Australia.
We wish the family well and will arrange an event to welcome them after they have settled into their new home, school and environment. We will also continue our Refugees Mentoring program with the family during their transition into the community.
I look forward to seeing you all at this Thursday’s Croquet Club meeting at 7.00am. Our guest speaker will be Janet Weir from the Stroke Foundation.
Best wishes and have a wonderful week. Yvette, President.
Complementing our recent Clare Riesling, we’re pleased to offer an excellent McLaren Vale Grenache that’s half price at just $150.00 per case ($12.50/bottle).
Grenache is now available in half a dozen at the price of $75.00.
Give your fiends and family an excellent deal, while helping to fund our local and overseas Rotary service work. among other things, we’re building water supplies in Timor Lesté, rescuing Afghans fleeing the Taliban and making recent Oz migrants quickly feel welcome.
The wine is ready for collection, so please contact me or Rob by email or phone below to order it.
For the benefit of members, we will aim to give the Duty Roster a few weeks ahead - see below.
