Stories
President's Pen
We had a great turnout for our first meeting of the year, and was especially pleased when “Friend of Rotary” Helen Smith joined us, along with Pat and Jody who came to their first formal meeting at our Club. Pat has been helping us with past BBQs and she walked with us in the “Rotary says No to Domestic Violence” rally. Jody has previously come to Coffee Conversation mornings.

At last week’s breakfast, we also welcomed Interplast District 9510 Chair Merilyn Russell to talk to us about Interplast and Rotary working together since 1983 to change lives for the better. Interplast’s teams of volunteer surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied health professionals have visited hospitals in developing nations across the Asia-Pacific. They provide plastic and reconstructive surgeries, post-operative care and rehabilitation to patients in desperate need and who could otherwise not afford this life-changing care. Some of their work involves reducing scarring from burns, cleft lip and palate surgeries in babies/children and any other specialist surgeries that are needed. Merilyn told us that through the Covid pandemic, Interplast temporarily had to stop visiting these countries, but held on-line training sessions and remote mentoring to provide local practitioners with access to the Interplast expertise. This on-line training is continuing even after the Covid risk has reduced, and it has proven that this remote mentoring is a game-changer for local surgeons.

I look forward to seeing you all at Coffee Conversations this coming Thursday at the White Picket Café, Dulwich.

Best wishes and have a wonderful week, Yvette.
McLaren Vale Grenache sales
Complementing our recent Clare Riesling, we’re pleased to offer an excellent McLaren Vale Grenache that’s also half price at just $150.00 per case ($12.50/bottle).

Grenache is a McLaren Vale specialty, medium bodied and more complex than pinot noir - essentially an easy drinking summer substitute for shiraz, without its earthiness.  This one from Hither & Yon is bright, juicy and lively with food - ideal in the warmer months ahead.  You may detect wild strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, black cherry, stewed plums, some spicy cinnamon and black pepper.  With time to breathe it comes across confidently on the first night and endures for the second.
Tasting notes attached and wine critic, Tony Love’s opinion follows:

Tony Love, In Daily February 2023:
"From the Leask brothers’ youngest Grenache vines at 13 years old, crafted into a youthful, fragrant, bistro style with 20% whole bunch influence in the winemaking that offers a subtle sappiness in the palate. While you are being seduced by its floral aromas and freshly squeezed plum and apple juiciness, you should pause for a mo, as it has plenty to offer in its textural game, lip-smacking and with an appealing spicy/peppery tannin profile in the palate and finish. Bistro, yes, and very food conscious as well – its own crew suggests pairing it with the vegetable and cheese pasty from the Willunga Bakery."

Give your fiends and family an excellent deal, while helping to fund our local and overseas Rotary service work.  among other things, we’re building water supplies in Timor Lesté, rescuing Afghans fleeing the Taliban and making recent Oz migrants quickly feel welcome.
The wine is ready for collection, so please contact me or Rob by email or phone below to order it - each case of 12 is $150.

The Four Way Test

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the Truth?
  2. Is it Fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build Goodwill and better Friendships?
  4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

Affirmation

United in the spirit of Service we value truth, fairness and friendship; and we welcome the opportunity that Rotary gives us to contribute our talents and resources in support of others.

Rotary Club of Adelaide Light Mission Statement

To have fun and engage interest from new members and friends as we use our strengths for a better world here and abroad - a welcoming, flexible group having fun doing hands-on activities for positive impact.

Jokes Corner
An elderly couple who were childhood sweethearts had married and settled down in their old neighbourhood and are celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
They walk down the street to their old school. There, they hold hands as they find the old desk they 'd shared and where he had carved "I love you, Sally."

On their way back home, a bag of money falls out of an armoured car practically at their feet. She quickly picks it up, but they don't know what to do with it, so they take it home. She counts the money, and it's fifty-thousand dollars.

The husband says, "We have to give it back."
She says, "Finders keepers." She puts the money back in the bag and hides it up in their attic.

The next day, two policemen are going door-to-door in the neighbourhood looking for the money and show up at their home. They say, "Pardon me, but did either of you find any money that fell out of an armoured car yesterday?"

She says, "No."

The husband says, "She is lying. She hid it up in the attic."

She says, "Don't believe him, he is getting senile."

But, the policemen sit the man down and begin to question him. One says, "Tell us the story from the beginning."

The old man says, "Well, when Sally and I were walking home from school yesterday..."

The policeman looks at his partner and says, "Let's get out of here."
