It was a pleasure to present Richard Jarrett with his Paul Harris (3 Sapphire) pin last meeting. Richard donates to the Centurion Club each year and these $100 annual donations eventually lead to the requisite $US1000 donation required to receive another Sapphire recognition. These funds are very necessary for the Rotary Foundation to continue their great work in providing funds for all Clubs in our Zone 8 Rotary area covering Australia and island countries.
Last Thursday’s excellent guest speaker was Janet Weir from the Stroke Foundation. Her talk on how to recognise and lower your risk of strokes was informative. Strokes attack the brain – our human control centre. A stroke is when blood can’t get to all parts of the brain due to a blockage (Ischaemic stroke) or a break that causes bleeding (Haemorrhagic stroke). Strokes can happen at any age and affects the way they walk, move, talk, swallow, think, feel and see. It was great to learn that more than 80% of strokes can be prevented if you take action to lower your risk of stroke. A TIA (transient ischaemic attack) is when blood can’t get to all parts of the brain for a short time, and often disappear completely and quickly; however, after a TIA your risk of a stroke is higher. To recognise the signs of stroke:
*Face (drooped)
*Arms (can’t be raised)
*Speech (slurred or confused)
*Time (is critical, call OOO immediately).
To lower your risk, there are some factors that increase your risk of having a stroke – namely, being older, being male, a family history of stroke or already having had a stroke. But everyone can take action to lower their risk by having a health check with your GP, and being active, eating well, carrying a healthy weight, avoiding excessive alcohol and quitting smoking. Have regular blood pressure checks (high blood pressure is a cause), get your cholesterol checked and check for Type 2 diabetes. Aim to be active for 30 minutes most days, eat foods from the key nutrition groups, drink plenty of water, and have regular GP check-ups to avoid strokes.
For those romantics in our Club, don’t forget to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your partner on Wednesday 14 Feb.
Our next Board Meeting will be held at John Wotherspoon’s home on Wednesday 21 February at 6.00pm. I look forward to seeing our Directors on the night; members are also welcome to attend. If a Director can’t attend on the night, please forward your report to the President and Secretary several days prior to the meeting.
This Saturday, Cuppa Conversation will be at the Esplanade Hotel, Brighton at 10am. As the weather will be warm, bring your bathers and towel if you would like to have a swim afterwards.
I look forward to seeing you all at Coffee Conversation this Thursday at the White Picket Café at 9.30am.
Best wishes and have a wonderful week. Yvette, President.
The next Cuppa Conversation will be this weekend (Saturday 17th Feb, 10 am), so let's leave the city and head to the beach! I've never been to Brighton before, so I'm looking forward to it. Bring your sunscreen and bathers; according to the forecast, the weather will be ideal for swimming.
Please let me know if you can do it, if you can pick up some attendants from my location in the city (18 Bewes St), and, if so, how many seats are available in your car. We'd love to see you there!
Complementing our recent Clare Riesling, we’re pleased to offer an excellent McLaren Vale Grenache that’s half price at just $150.00 per case ($12.50/bottle).
Grenache is now available in half a dozen at the price of $75.00.
Give your fiends and family an excellent deal, while helping to fund our local and overseas Rotary service work. among other things, we’re building water supplies in Timor Lesté, rescuing Afghans fleeing the Taliban and making recent Oz migrants quickly feel welcome.
The wine is ready for collection, so please contact me or Rob by email or phone below to order it.
For the benefit of members, we will aim to give the Duty Roster a few weeks ahead - see below.
