BOARD MEETING MINUTES

August 8, 2013

Members Present: Tom Turriff, Joe McGowan, Ina Mapes, Jim Karp, Joe Dylewski, Pepe Estrella, Tamara Hutto, Roger Bogard, Mark Miller, Ilene Skinner and Tom Simester

Members Absent: Cathy Stevens, Savo Fries, Ed Drager, Steve McNeil and Steve Harsch

Guests: District Governor (DG) Nancy Cassel, Assistant DG Joe Hentges, Neil Deppe and Bill Pohnert

Called to Order:  10:00 a.m. by Tom Turriff

President’s Report:  Tom Turriff

  • Tom introduced our DG Nancy Cassel and ADG Joe Hentges to the Board.
  • The District Conference will be held at Hilton East April 25-27.
  • Tom told the board Rotary International’s focus is on membership growth, enhancing humanitarian service and strengthening our network through the Family of Rotary.
  • Our International Rotary Exchange Student Liv Hansen will be arriving shortly.
  • The District’s Rotary Foundation Seminar and Dinner will be held Nov 2nd. The seminar will be at Pima Community College NW Campus and the dinner at Omni Hotel.
    • The Breakout sessions will include one on grant management.
    • Past RI President Ray Klinginsmith will be the guest speaker.
    • Two club members must attend to maintain our certification for next year. Tom Turriff will attend and he wants at least two more Club members to join him.
  • Tom announced Mark Miller will be riding in the Tour De Tucson representing our club. This year, there will also be an indoor Tour option for stationary bike riders.
  • The next Board meeting will be September 12th.

Secretary:  Joe Dylewski

  • Joe handed out a sheet depicting members who have missed the last three meetings and also those who currently have lower than 50% attendance for the year.

Treasurer’s Report:  Mark Miller  

  • The club will be using Canyon Community Bank now.
  •  The club completed the 2012-2013 year with a budget surplus of $2722.
  • Mark will be working hard to collect all outstanding membership dues for this year.

Past President Report:  Steve McNeil (Absent)

  • Joe McGowan moved and seconded by Mark Miller for Tom Turriff to procure a conference room speaker phone for the club, expense to be split with our foundation. Passed.
  • John Ruland will be leading our Cell Phone Recycling program.  The club will be heavily promoting this program within the community. 

Club Admin:  Steve McNeil (Absent)

  • Nothing to Report.

Community Service:  Ina Mapes

  • There is a “Stuff the Bus” ream paper collection event at the Minit Market on Aug 10th 9:00-11:00, volunteers needed.  Oracle Elementary School District’s goal is 1,000 reams of paper.
  • There is a school supplies collection at the August 15th club meeting to help Mammoth, San Manuel and Coronado School District.
  • The club will be presenting dictionaries to Coronado 3rd graders Sep 12 at 9:00 AM.

Membership: Joe McGowan

  • Joe announced Doris Helmich, John Grindley, and Fred Page will not be renewing their memberships.
  • Joe McGowan moved and Ina seconded the nomination of Doris Helmich as an honorary member of the club. Passed.
  • Tamara moved and Ilene seconded the motion to approve Linda Turbyfill, Bob Sommer, Nelson Rodriguez and William Grant for club membership. Passed.

SB Foundation: Roger Bogard

  • Gave the DG a written report on activities of the SRCF.  

Director of Communications:  Savo Fries (Absent)

  • Nothing additional to report.

President-Elect Report:  Ilene Skinner

  • Nothing additional to report.

Sergeant at Arms: Jim Karp

  • Nothing additional to report.

International:  Pepe Estrella

  • Pepe gave the DG and ADG a brief history of the club’s efforts in forging a partnership with the Rotary club of Nogales, MX and efforts to assist them.

Programs: Tamara Hutto

  • Tamara reported speakers have been scheduled through June 2014.
  • Speaker bios need to be received. Upon receipt they will be posted on ClubRunner.  

New Generations / Youth Services: Ed Drager (Absent)

  • Coronado K-8 will be added to the club’s 4-way speech contest. A decision needs to be made as to whether to have their own contest or merged with other schools.
  • Liv Hansen our exchange student will arrive 11 Aug.  A reception party is planned for October. 
  • Ed will be leading the Junior Achievement program at Coronado K-8.

District Governor Business: Nancy Cassel

  • More district funds will be available for grants then in the past.
    • Hopefully the projects will be sustainable year after year.
  • The District will also be raising funds through an indoor Tour De Tucson through the use of the time spent riding on stationary bikes.
  • Nancy said her two goals for her year are Membership Growth and Foundation Funding.
  • Nancy said the District suffered a net loss of 20 members last year. Membership was at 1800 five years ago, but it now sits at 1572.
  • As part of the Ignite program, speaker warriors went out to the clubs to coordinate on membership retention and growth.
  • New Generations is now called Youth Services.
  • The Four Way District competition will be held at the April 2014 District conference.

Other Board Business: Board Members

  • Tom asked the board for a moment of silence for Ilene Skinner’s mother who recently passed away.
