Diego Carneiro is a Brazilian cellist, conductor, composer, and peace advocate whose music bridges continents, cultures, and causes. As the founder of the AmazonArt Foundation, FOMITA, Orquesta Joven del Ecuador, and Orchestrating Peace, Diego has dedicated his career to transforming music into a tool for education, healing, and global connection. He is also the visionary behind the Instruments of Peace Campaign, a growing international initiative that donates musical instruments to underserved and displaced youth.

Diego has performed in over 60 countries, from the Royal Albert Hall in London to communities deep in the Amazon. His repertoire blends classical works, particularly those of Bach, with Brazilian rhythms and original compositions inspired by nature and social justice.

In 2024, he was selected as a Rotary Peace Fellow at Makerere University in Uganda, where he launched the global project Orchestrating Peace through Music. During this time, he began composing Amazonian Elegy: A Tribute to the Lost Species, a haunting solo cello piece that earned him the Annual Nancy Erickson Endangered Species Art Award (2025). The work premiered at the Rotary International Convention in Calgary, Canada, where it moved audiences with its message: “A cry from the forest. A call for urgent action.”

Diego’s work has been recognized by the United Nations, Rotary International, and various Ministries in Ecuador and Brazil, and featured on CNN, BBC, Deutsche Welle, and France 24.

Join us for a special program as we present the 2025-26 Sunrise Foundation Annual Report and officially launch the 2026-27 Every SUNRISE Rotarian Every Year Campaign. President Janet Napier and Foundation Treasurer Jody Dolan Holehouse will share the annual report, followed by highlights of our foundation’s impact from Ron Brooks (Community Service) and Margie Woodruff (International Service). We’ll also kick off this year’s Season of Giving.

The meeting begins at 7:00 a.m. but come earlier to hang out with a cup of something warm and mingle with Rotarians and guests. Breakfast buffet includes fresh fruit, baked breads, scrambled eggs, potatoes, and bacon. $40 guest fee payable at the door.

Show Your Favorite Beach Some Love!

It’s time to roll up our sleeves and make a difference! Join Explore Ecology for the 42nd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 19, and be part of California's largest volunteer cleanup event.

Spend a few hours outdoors helping protect the beaches, creeks, parks, and waterways that make Santa Barbara County such a wonderful place to live. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy nature, connect with fellow volunteers, and help keep marine debris out of our ocean.

Club member Julie De Angelis will be hosting the cleanup at El Capitan Beach and invites Sunrise members to join her there! Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and supplies and instructions will be provided. If you have them, please bring your own gloves, bucket, and reusable cleanup supplies to help reduce the event's plastic footprint.
