TEAM ROTARY: Children’s Garden Work Day

Volunteers needed for this hands-on opportunity to help complete the Children’s Garden at Parque de los Ninos on the Westside.

The City of Santa Barbara will be partnering with Union Bank to start a new gardening/ healthy foods program for children and families on the Westside. The garden will provide an opportunity to teach youth and their families how to grow their own fresh food at the garden site and give them classes on healthy cooking and eating out of the Westside Center Community Kitchen. The goal is to complete this work by late 2018, so the program can kick off with the children and their families the following spring. 

Sunrise Rotary volunteers will be needed for the following:

• Building planter boxes (approximately 6-8 of them) and filling them with good soil (with shovels and wheelbarrows) and refurbishing some old boxes on the site
• Creating a path between the boxes (add wood chips to walkway with shovels and wheelbarrows)
• Sand and paint 4 picnic tables we’d bring to the site
• Set up hoses and drip irrigation tubing around existing fruit trees
