October 17, 2015 from 11am-2pm at the Glendale YMCA. Tiles can be purchased for $25 each...you paint them or donate to allow a child to paint. These tiles will grace a special wall in the "Y" allowing each child to show pride of participation.

Gladden Scholarship PresentationLarry Tison, President of the Glendale Rotary Foundation, presented the Gladden Scholarship for International Travel. Our recipient was Kaigan Loera, daughter of member Brian Bergh, who travelled to China earlier this summer with members of her school.
Kaigan gave a presentation contrasting the differences in food, travel, customs, and monuments between China and the United States. Many differences were noted.
Congratulations to Kaigan for receiving this scholarship.

Join us tomorrow for our 3rd annual Jewel City Fun Ride, a community event benefiting 3 local community benefit organizations which focus on helping children in need.

the Glendale YWCA.

Join us tomorrow, May 21st, for our annual scholarship presentation to GCC students.
Glady Kabateck will join us tomorrow as we present four $750 scholarships to GCC re-entry students. These four students are well deserving of the scholarships and were selected from many applicants.
We will present these in memory of Jack Kabateck, long-time Glendale Rotarian, who passed away in 2014. He and Glady have been instrumental with these scholarships for many years. The students
receiving them in the past have been very grateful for the support from our club. For many, this scholarship has allowed them to continue with their education at GCC.

Melanie is KPCC's Vice President of Content. She served as the station's Executive Editor from 2012 to July 2014, supervising the staffs that produce KPCC’s news and feature content for all platforms: broadcast, web, mobile, social media and live events.Before she joined Southern California Public Radio in April , Melanie held the top editing jobs at the Sacramento Bee, where she was editor and senior vice president for news from 2007 through 2011, and at The News & Observer of Raleigh, where she spent the last five years of her 25-year tenure as executive editor and senior vice president. As projects editor, she directed the 1995 series “Boss Hog,” for which The N&O won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1996.
After leaving the Bee in 2011, Melanie was named Journalism Executive in Residence at USC Annenberg, where she authored a discussion paper, “The Case for Open Journalism Now,” published by the Annenberg Innovation Lab. She is a current board member for the (California) First Amendment Coalition and an advisory board member for the California Health Care Foundation’s Center for Health Reporting. In the past, she served on the boards of the American Society of News Editors and Poynter.
Born in Nebraska and raised in Waipahu, Hawaii, she earned her journalism degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard in 1993-94. Along with journalism, she loves music, gardening, the outdoors and exploring Southern California.

Born in India, Ray came to the USA when he was 17.
He's a proud member of Glendale Sunrise for over 17 years and runs dry cleaning businesses in both Glendale & Pasadena.
Ray is very active in Rotary and has been involved in many of Rotary Projects.
He's completed over 50 Orphanage Trips near Ensenada Mexico, where he typically goes every quarter.
He's also championed Coats For Kids & Rotaplast International which Rotarian sponsored surgeries in 15 missions in the world for the Glendale Sunrise Rotary.

Dr. Chan is an accomplished physician specializing in Occupational Medicine.
Dr. Chan completed his medical training at Loma Linda University in 2007. He completed his Master of Public Health, LIfestyle Medicine,
at Loma Linda in 2011.
Currently, Dr. Chan holds appointments as Medical Director, Glendale Adventist Hospital, Occupational Medicine Center; Medical Director of Rapid Care Urgent Care Centers in Glendale and Burbank; and is a Clinical Instructor at the USC Keck School of Medicine.

Kathy Lefkovits will be our guest speaker on April 23rd.Born at Glendale Memorial Hospital and grew up in La Canada.
Kathy married in 1973 and moved to Chevy Chase Canyon in 1973 and began her Real Estate career in 1987 with Buchanan and Associate. She credits Fran as being a mentor who showed her the value of community service.
Kathy was elected president of Soroptimist Int. of Glendale 2003-2004. She says, "I do not think the Soroptimist's quite knew what they were getting into because I did NOT want to have another fashion show for our fund raising event. Consequently Bras for a Cause was born. The rest is history."
Soroptomists International Glendale just held their 12th Bras for a Cause and it is now being held across the United States and Canada.
And yes, she is known as "The Bra Lady."

We have the distinct pleasure of having Todd Hunt, President of the Glendale Kiwanis, speak to us at our April 9th meeting. Todd will be sharing with us information about the Kiwanis signature projects.
Todd is a life-long Glendale resident and he's in love with this crazy town.
His passion is community service and helping others embrace the value of serving others, especially young people.
When he's not serving somewhere, he's Senior Vice President of a financial software development company.
He and his beautiful wife Pam have been married for almost 30 years and they have four awesome kids!
Our meeting will be Thursday, April 9th, at the Embassy Suites in Glendale. Meeting starts at 12 noon.

April 2, 2015 meeting!!
Our meeting this week will feature fellow Rotarian Jim BeardsleyJim has been a Rotarian for 28 years and is married to Elyse, another Rotarian.
Jim is a charter member of the South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club and has served in just every capacity possible. Jim has also served as an Assistant Governor for 4 years.
This past year, he was asked to chair and organize a charity 5K/10K run/walk for District 5280 ("321 Go to End Polio") which occurred on March 21, 2015. A successful event, with 450 participants.
Jim also created the Rat Beach Bike Tour in Redondo Beach. This event started in 2010 and the 6th annual event will occur this year. The bike tour has grown from an initial ridership of 450, to 650 riders in 2014. The club gave away $15K to local charities.
Jim and Elyse met through their Rotary activities and have been together for over 20 years.
Jim graduated from the University of Redlands and worked for GTE/Verizon as an Operations Manager. He retired early from that position and went to work for what is now Time Warner in the same capacity.
Jim's sideline job, Real Estate Investing, has now become his third career, where he now works for Nation Wide Real Estate Executives.

March 12th meeting - RYLA
Elyse joined the El Segundo Rotary in 1988, the first woman member of the club. She has served as president twice, also being the 1st woman president.
She currently serves as the Youth Service Chair and has been the club liaison to their Interact club for 19 years. Elyse has also been attending RYLA for 19 years and has been the co-chair for at least 12 years.
Elyse also serves as the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce president for a 2nd term.
Elyse is the owner of Industrial Lock and Security, a full service locksmith company in El Segundo and has owned the company for 33 years. Industrial Lock and Security has a storefront location and 5 mobile service vehicles. The company recently re-keyed the Queen Mary (1047 keyholes) and are soon to re-key all the locks at the Academy of Motion Pictures and the Glendale Memorial Hospital. The company has 10 employees.
Elyse has been married for 13 years to a man she met through the Rotary bowling league. He is in the South Bay Torrance Club.
Elyse has 7 grandkids, and has never been pregnant?

March 5th meeting - Tereza Yerimyan will be presenting the History of Near East Foundation. The Armenian National Committee launched a campaign called "America We Thank You" ....following is a brief history of Near East Foundation.
An Unprecedented Movement of American Citizen Philanthropy
Founded in 1915, the currently-named Near East Foundation (formerly known as Near East Relief or NER) is the United States’ oldest Congressionally-sanctioned non-governmental organization which for the first time in American history expressed the collective generosity and humanitarianism of the American People. The NER served as a model upon which future philanthropic organizations, including the U.S. Peace Corps and USAID, and future calls for overseas relief efforts known as “citizen philanthropy” were modeled.
The highly successful Near East Relief (NER) movement literally saved the Armenian nation from total annihilation....
Tereza Yerimyan is the Government Affairs Director at the Armenian National Committee of America Western Region. She is also the President of the East Hollywood Neighborhood Council and Tereza received her Bachelor's degree from UCLA. February 26th meeting will feature Colonel Nancy Sumner.
Colonel Sumner is the commander of the 146th Medical Group, 146th Airlift Wing, located at Channel Islands Air National Guard Station, Port Hueneme, Calif. She has been a member of the California National Guard since 1981 and received an Associate’s Degree as a Registered Nurse in 1986 from Glendale Community College. Her career with the Air National Guard has been devoted to the field of medicine and aeromedical evacuation. Colonel Sumner assumed command of the 146th Medical Group on December 1, 2007.
Colonel Sumner was assigned to the 146th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron as a Medical Technician upon completion of technical school. She attained the rank of Staff Sergeant prior to being commissioned into the Nurse Corps in 1986. While assigned to the Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, Colonel Sumner’s positions included OIC Flight Scheduling, OIC Mobile Aeromedical Staging Facility, and Chief of Standards and Evaluation. During this period she served in Operation DESERT STORM where she flew 36 aeromedical evacuation missions. In March of 2001 she transferred to the 146th Medical Group as Chief Nurse. She spent
September of 2001 through April of 2004 activated in support of the Global War on Terrorism, five months of which she was deployed in Afghanistan where she commanded the 438th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Group. This service led to the award of the Bronze Star, and to her being named as the California Air Force Association’s Field Grade Officer of the Year. Col Sumner’s overseas deployments include locations such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belize, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.
Colonel Sumner completed Squadron Officer School and Air War College in 1994 and 2005 respectively. She was promoted to the rank of Colonel on February 25, 2009.
Her military decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Aerial
Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement, Army Achievement Medal, and various service and overseas campaign medals.
Charles Shumate will speak to us regarding the GCC Veterans' Center.
Located in AA-2, the Veterans’ Resource Center is a workspace as well as a resource for employment, scholarships, workshops on campus, housing, medical and off campus veteran programs. The center provides peer-to-peer support and mentoring, education counseling and tutoring for veterans who need help with their classes.
The center also provides services for the veterans’ dependents, which includes the husband, wife and/or children

We thought we were out of Iraq and Afghanistan - Now what?Join us tomorrow, as we hear from Major General Mark MacCarley.
Highly decorated Major General Mark MacCarley served in the US Army from 2002-2014. He is now practicing law in Glendale, specializing in real property and real estate broker representation issues, business and corporations, contract and employment law, intellectual property and IT matters for clients developers, institutional brokerages, insurance carriers, employee associations and municipalities.
This should be a very interesting topic.

Today we celebrated the last meeting of Rotary Heritage Month by having our own member, Cal Devnich, describe his family's moves from their native Ukraine across the Atlantic Ocean to re-settle in North Dakota with stops in Canada before eventually reaching Glendale. Cal was able to eloquently describe his family's economic hardships and challenges on the journey and their eventual realization of "the American dream". Cal reminded us that America is a "nation of immigrants" and with dedication and hard work "these immigrants" can continue to make the United States of America the greatest country in the world. Thanks Cal for such a pleasant discussion
