William Song: Adventure in Citizenship
You can certainly tell a happy teenager by
his enormous smile, and William Song was
really beaming today. Having returned
from the Adventure in Citizenship trip at
the end of April, he came today to give us a
slide show and his impressions.
William was the finalist from our essay and
speech contest held in February. His prize
was a 4 day trip to Ottawa to participate
with over 220 other young adults in a citizenship
and leadership event organized and
hosted by the Ottawa Rotary Club.
William's host family was of particular
note, as the grandmother, Joan O'Malley,
sewed the first Canadian flag with the maple
leaf, back in the 1960's. She even gave
him a signed version of our flag.
The students braved inclement weather to visit many historical sites and forged new friendships
in the process. Citizenship court, a mock trial and a tour of the House of Commons
were of great interest to him. He was amazed at the skill of the translators in the House,
who instantly translate our two official languages with no apparent lapse of time.
Tours of famous buildings were also on the agenda. William enjoyed the Museum of Civilization,
the Governor General's residence and the War Museum.
William loved the experience of meeting other students from all parts of Canada. He feels
he has gained considerable understanding about our country and its people. William closed
his presentation with the gift of a clock, featuring the provincial and territorial shields.
What a great opportunity we have provided to this deserving young man. His experiences
on this adventure will surely stay with him and hopefully have a positive influence on his
future.
