Each time we visit the Coast Mental Health programs at Riverview, we learn something new and gain a deeper understanding of the work being done by Beata and her team. This week's visit was no exception as Beata arranged for two current residents to tell us about their own journeys and how they are overcoming the challenges of having both mental health and substance use issues.

Both J and K spoke eloquently of their determination to live healthier lives and fulfil their dreams of school and employment, while offering us  insight into their past struggles.  They both also acknowledged the vital role that Hillside and Brookside have played in their recovery...offering safety and support on a consistent, long term basis.  Beata explained the goals of the program and how the therapeutic process is tailored to helping residents work through past traumas and gain strength and skills to deal with daily life without the use of self medication.

The Club was also provided a lovely breakfast and had an opportunity to tour both the Hillside and the Brookside buildings and see where many program activities take place. In Brookside, we saw a beautiful example of how Native spirituality has been woven into the fabric of the program..this was made visible by artwork on the day room's wall.  In thanking both J and K, Beata had told us of the beautiful art that K has created and K had told us that he has reconnected to his native culture as part of his recovery.

We all thank both Beata and Darrell for letting us into the sanctuary of the programs and are reminded of the  importance of wider social support for those in attendance, as overcoming social isolation is a big part of maintaining a full and healthy life.
