Rotary Club of Port Moody  Meeting  May 27, 2015

Our meeting was at the Port Moody Police Station.  We were greeted and treated with great friendliness by our own Police Department!

All told us about the Rotaract High Tea fundraiser on June 14th.  They need help with supplies, etc

Allison told us about the Heritage Woods school project with Kenya.  There is a possibility of an award of $50,000.  The project will bring Kenyan students to Canada.  This is a great mentoring opportunity!

SFPP The wrap-up meeting will be June 16th at Linda’s, at 7:00 pm

The 50/50 tickets will be available next week.  Reminder:  the pot has a potential of $30,000!

Installation night is June 18th.  Be sure to be signed up, and pay for your companion!

Ribfest: Volunteers are needed.  See Trudy for the paperwork. All volunteers must have a police check!

The focus of our visit to the Police Station was to learn about the Victim Services department.  We were very proud to present them with our cheque for $3,000!  We were able to do this because of all our work in producing the Search for the Perfect Pint fundraiser.  Good job, everyone!

This money will be used to furnish a Soft Interview Room with comfy seating and children’s toys, etc.  to aid  when a family has been traumatized.

We visited the room.  It is light and airy, with big windows for natural light.  It will provide a space for the Mental Health Officer, to serve At-Risk Youth, and victims of Domestic Violence.  It is a holistic approach to service.

We then had a tour of the whole facility.  It  has a gym, sleeping room, shower and lunch room.  Of course, there is also the Records Room, and space for the Dispatchers.

Port Moody Police Dept. has 52 police, with 4-6 persons on the road at any given time.  They would like to bring this up to 7 or 8 police per shift.   I

n the summer they will try to get some police on bikes..  They are also looking for full-time bike volunteers.

About the Skytrain coming in:  The rise in criminal activity relates to the criminal activity already in the community.  That is, if there is a problem already it will be worsened.  Port Moody is not a high-crime area, so they do not expect a great problem to arise.

Question:  What can we do to help?

Take ownership of your community:

  1. Know your neighbours so you can notice if anything strange starts, then
  2. CALL!    Don’t be afraid of appearing silly, or there being no real reason.  The police need to know what is happening out there.

We also learned that the Guildford/Ioco intersection has the highest traffic accident incidence in the lower mainland.  The red light cameras are expected to help with this.
