Speakers Corner - Miranda Andersen
Beata introduced Miranda Andersen, a 13 year old filmmaker from Belcarra.
She has been a film
maker for the past 4 years. She is an activist for the environment, saving the planet and
Encouraging youth to reconnect with nature. She has been the recipient of many awards,
Local, Canadian and International award.
Miranda’s films urge people to protect the environment and engage with nature, get off the
Couch and enjoy the nature around us. She considers her films her form of activism. A good
Film should make us ask questions.
She travelled to Hawaii to meet with a lady who is trying to protect the world’s coral for the
Future generations, to San Diego to meet with Richard Lour who is featured in the film she
Presented to us today. She feels that we are suffering from a disorder she calls Nature
Deficit Disorder.
Kids spend 63% of their time in front of a screen when they should be outside engaging with
Nature. Richard Lour says that nature inspires creativity and kids should be involved at a young age to participate in the nature around them. When involved at a young age they stay involved into adulthood. If we don’t get young people interested in preserving the
Planet and nature in the future.
Involvement in nature has shown those who are involved have better school marks in every
Subject. 46% of children have less than 3 hours outside time PER WEEK.
Miranda asked us if we can live with the cost of not getting back to nature.
She talked about the “Get to know Contest” co formed by Robert Bateman and encouraged
Us to look at the website www.info@gettoknow.ca

During question and answer Miranda said she would like to become a marine biologist when
She is through school and is inspired by the lady in Hawaii to protect the sealife.
You can see all of Miranda’s films on her website.
She is truly an inspirational young lady, if she is indicative of our future generation then we
Will be fine. Her ability to speak to us as a group and present her film and her point of view
Is amazing, putting a lot of adults, this writer included, to shame.
Draw Vida very kindly gave her ticket to Griffin, Miranda’s brother, Miranda pulled out the ticket
And it was Vida’s so Griffin won today’s pot, we gave him the entire amount, which he
Wanted to donate back but it was felt that he and Miranda deserved a nice big ice cream or
Some such treat. Well done, great meeting…….
