Rotary RIPPED at RIPS!

50 volunteers came out on Saturday and Removed 15 cubic feet of Invasive Plants!
It was hard work but there was a sense of accomplishment as long strands of English Ivy were pulled up. Ivy carpets the ground and doesn’t allow the natural mix of plants to flourish and feed the wildlife. It also creeps up trees and strangles them when it is ready to release its seeds.  Black walnut, Holly and a little bit of Lamium were also taken out.
Seeing cedar, burdock, piggy-back plant, stinging nettle and others are thriving with only a few tiny ivy plants in the area that we are working on also created a sense of  well being. We are making a difference.
The City of Port Moody, Noon’s Creek Hatchery our Rotary Club partner to organize the event and the volunteers made it happen. We had 20 members of the amazing Water Polo team and they were stars. Rotaractors came and helped teach the volunteers how to pull. They also had an opportunity to promote Interact and Rotaract programs. Successs was out and everyone fell in love with the young Syrian boys that worked so hard. There were some members of the general public as well.

Thank you Yvonne for helping with everything from buying the groceries, photographing, to setting up and taking down the event. Trudy for always catching the details and serving everyone with a smile. Dan and Bill were machines pulling out the ivy and then cooking up the hot dogs. Linda, for being an encouraging doll for contacting volunteers. Thanks also to the Rotarians that wanted to come but just couldn’t make it that day.
What a team! What a great day!

AND to CLEONE for always being so enthusiastic about this and all events.
