“MEMBERSHIP”

Membership is a most important topic and this week Patty shared her thoughts with us as the Membership Chair of our club.

She took as back to basics and asked a number of people what they thought membership was all about. Each one had a slightly different take on it but together we covered all the bases. Perhaps the more important one is to distinguish between being a member and being a Rotarian.  Rotary makes a deep impact in our lives as Rotarians.

The various members are like parts of the whole body and each must contribute their specific talents/gifts so that as a whole we can make a significant impact on our society.

There are lots of resources that we can use to increase our membership.  Through www.rotary.org we can access videos, themes, webinars, etc.  We don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Fireside gatherings are important because newer members can hear from experienced members what they do and how they do it.  They get exposure to the various committees and this allows members to be involved in the club.  Linda has volunteered to have one at her house this fall and will update the date as soon. Also, the classification talks from our members help us to learn more about our fellow Rotarians and see what makes them tick. This is how a small group of people are able to achieve a lot and have fun at the same time.

Mentoring is a very useful tool to help new members to get up to speed quickly. A good example is Ron and Jason. Jason has been able to help Ron with the organizing of events such as the Generous Hearts Food Drive, where Jason is now able to co-chair some of these events and probably will take them over from Ron in the near future.

Who are the members of the membership committee?  We all are as active members of the Rotary Club of Port Moody, with the past, present and incoming chairs leading the committee.

Let’s continue to:

  1. Build Communities,
  2. Bridge Continents, to achieve
  3. Peace Through Service
