Announcements:


Isabella announced that Imagefrom the Fashion show with launched Joe Trasolini’s relection bid.  These funds will help send five children to summer camp this year!


Isy also announced that there is a Seaview Pancake Breakfast tomorrow to help support the Kids Camp Program.


Ann extended a thank you to all those involved in supporting the recent Group Study Exchange team from New Zealand.  Particularly Allen Schmelzel, Nick Stebbing, Al Stjernegaard who hosted or drove the GSE team members around during the week they were with us.  


Jason spoke of the plans to support the SHARE Foodbank at the upcoming Generous Hearts Food Drive on May 25th and 26th.  He also introduce Teri Towner who is Share’s new Special Events Development Officer.


Linda reported on the upcoming Shred-a-thon on June 8th.  She’s looking for Volunteers to help during the day and also for Club Members to “advertise” across the community for folks to bring in their old papers for secure shredding! 


Nick spoke of the Rotary Foundation program – EREY – “Every Rotarian Every Year”.  The proceeds of the Rotary Foundation do come back to our district and the Port Moody Club has been able to utilize those funds to send containers to South Africa as well as support other forms of international service.  As the foundation is looking meet its goals this year, the Port Moody club has made the offer to match every $50 donation with an equivalent Paul Harris match up to $400 if made in the next two weeks.  President Al started the ball off with a $50 donation.  


President Al also announced that he had $25 Gift Certificates for the Well that he is selling.  These are “free” to the club and to proceeds are all “net” to the club.  The Well has excellent menus and it would be terrific to get these off Al’s hands.  


Sergeant at Arms duties fell to that Happy Retired Fellow, Ron Baker.  Linda Balzer admitted sheepishly that she had received Dahlias as a present at the Perfect Pint and unfortunately misplaced them – sorry she didn’t want anyone else to know!  ;)   


Our Guest Mayor Mike Clay gave several happy dollars to congratulate all those who had put themselves forward in public service in yesterday’s election.  Rotary was well represented in this area:

  • Linda Reimer, a Coquitlam Rotarian was successful over Joe Trasolini, a former Charter Member of the Port Moody Club.
  • Doug Horne, who’s wife Larissa is also a Coquitlam Rotarian successfully held his seat over Chris Wilson a Coquitlam Sunrise Rotarian. 

 


Patty Klassen who is the outgoing District RYLA Chair announced that on June 12th be prepared as we are being invaded by the RYLA Class of 2013 who will be presenting on their experiences at the recent RYLA event in Mount Baker. 


Guest Speaker was our very own Exchange Student Justin Porena who is currently being bunked under the stairs at Happy Ron Baker’s.  


Justin spoke of his home town of Newcastle Australia in New South Wales as well as the Geography, History and Political situation in Australia.  Australia was colonized in 1783 by the British and was initially a penal colony until 1851 when GOLD was found!   Of course, that changed everything.   In 1901 Australia became independent from Britain.


Unfortunately I had to leave and missed Justin’s presentation on his family.  Justin will be with us through to January 2014.  Please consider involving him in family activities through the summer.
