Peter introduced our guest speakers -  Ken Holland and Keisha Rosario from the Haney Club who talked to us about their recent trip to Guatemala.

They participated in a very interesting programme with the Burlington Club sponsoring students to travel to Guatemala to work with the Hands for Peacemaking organization to install properly vented wood burning stoves into homes a village.

The group consisted of 7 students, sponsored by the Rotary Clubs, 3 Rotarians who combined with local people in Guatemala.  In order to be included in the trip the students had to commit to 80 hours of community service in the communities served by their sponsoring clubs.  The clubs paid $1000.00 towards each students expenses,  the students had to raise $1500.00 each to be able to participate.

Once in Guatemala the group was split into three groups and each group was joined by an elder from the Village and a member of the Hands for Peacemaking.   Each group was then taught how to assemble and install the stoves.  Once trained they went into the village and went into the homes and installed the stoves and venting required.   The showed an interesting slide show which explained how the stoves were installed and the problems encountered.

They spent 5 days in the village interacting with the children and families in the community and found it very hard to leave at the end of the week.  In all they installed 75 stoves, each family committed to pay 25.00 per stove, payable over 5 years.

This truly sounds like a great project.

Peter’s ticket was pulled at the 50/50 draw but he did not find the elusive Ace of Clubs……sorry Peter better luck next time.

All in all a great meeting.
