Guest Speakers:  Britt Andersen, Executive Director,  and Donna White, BC/Yukon Director  from the Terry Fox Foundation

The Mission of the Foundation is to raise money for Cancer Research.  This is done primarily through the Terry Fox Run each year. The theme is “A Single Dream, a World of Hope”.   The run is very family-oriented; anyone can run, or walk, or wheel their chair, or bring their dog, etc., and there is no minimum donation. The run is the second largest fundraiser for cancer research.  It has  raised $700 million.  It takes place in 32 countries, with 5000 runs, 2000 of which are in Cuba.

The Foundation works with a very small staff, just 33 across Canada and  5 in the BC office.   84 cents of every dollar goes to cancer research.  All advertising is donated and they rely heavily on the help of volunteers.

Terry Fox, known fondly as “Our Local Hero”  ran a marathon a day for 143 days, on one leg.  His goal was $24 million, one dollar for each Canadian.   In 1998 the Terry Fox Foundation became a Registered Charity.  In 2997, Terry Fox Research was formed.  Since then there have been great strides in treatments and medications. As there are 200 forms of Cancer, this is greatly needed.

This year is the 35th Anniversary run.  There is a new event: the Terry Fox Training Run,  the 10 miles Terry did every day to prepare for the big run.  It will be Sunday, Sept. 20th.  Eventually there will be permanent markers for the route.
