Share the Light of Rotary District 5050 Conference April 30 - May 3 2015 at the Tulalip Resort
Great starting my day sharing with my brother and sisters of Rotary. I see many of you at district meetings but have not had the opportunity of seeing you at your own clubs. I want to talk to you today about membership as I have concerns about this topic. Our total membership world wide has now dropped below 1.2 million members. Membership is growing in our Asian communities and is dropping in Europe and in the America's. As we start to enter out of rotary, who will be there to fill our place? Three aspects i want to speak about Rotary engagement, generic membership growth and define membership attraction.
Just like any other business Rotary sets goals ie for membership and the goal is to move membership by 3% or appx 80,000 members and for our district by a net positive number of 85 members. Your club has a target of 4 new net members to bring your membership from 32 to 36.
My Club needed to grow by 40 new members the year I was president just to keep even as we usually lost about 40 members a year.
Member Engagement:
You make them feel as if they belong, assign them a task so they are involved and get them to buy in to Rotary and provide them with a good mentor to work with them. The engagement piece helps them to understand what Rotary is all about and this builds for long term membership.
Generic Membership:
Its everybody's job to work on bringing in new members to your club and its not just the Membership Chairs responsibility. There are professionals in your area that are interested in knowing more about Rotary but don't necessarily know how to find out where to go to join a club. Sometimes we take for granted the people we know like our friends or colleagues don't know what we do with Rotary and don't take for granted that they know what we do. It is everyones responsibility to build membership.
Define Membership Attraction:
Rotary has been in place for 110 years and if you ask anyone under 40 years of age they do not know much about what Rotary does in the community. Their basic knowledge is that we have lunch or breakfast together, we have a wheel posted around town and they are all old grey haired people.
There are only 3 countries remaining to stamp out Polio. We have a very active public relations department and trying to build on the PR to get Rotary's name out there and don't stop explaining to all we know what Rotary is about and what we do for our communities.
New members we need to explain what we can do for them and how it can help them meet with more community leaders and individuals from other clubs as well as receive a good mentorship as well. Rotary is a great place to nurture a young individual in the community to become a stronger leader for their community. Let the new members understand what we do for helping our communities.
Engaging both new and existing members and to focus on younger people about Rotary and invite them to our meetings.
Reminded us about the upcoming district conference and the resort is an incredible 5 star resort and they do a great job for conventions with good food, rooms and conference facilities. Golf Tournament on the Friday, take a tour of the Boeing Facility which employs over 40,000 people. There is lots of things to do while you are there. There will be great speakers and have a lot of fun. Please mark this on your calendar and you can go online now and register.
