Rotary Meeting July 4th 2018

Guests: Twayson Laird Scotiabank,

and 2 guests, Victor (15 years with Scouts) and Karin (5 years) from the 180th Pacific Coast Rover Scout Crew who volunteered for us at RIBFEST last year and are signed up again this year.

Announcements:

Patty and Don’s 29th anniversary, Cindy Cuthbert’s birthday

Ian introduced his 6th Sgt-at-Arms for the year, Terry Miller, who was away in China when we had our installation.

Summer Sundays concerts started July 8th and we advertised RIBFEST and got 2 volunteers that day.

Also on the 8th several of our members are going to Camp Jubilee.

Trudy has arranged for 6 Adirondack chairs for our Volunteer tent at RibFest. Thanks to Paul for agreeing to pick them up on Thursday and Steve to drop them off on Monday.

Discussed possibility of running a beer tent for the double header

Summer Sundays on August 5th. Waiting for the City to approve a beer tent for that day. If approved there may be another opportunity for the last concert September 2nd.

August 19th is “Car Free Day

RIBFEST is coming July 20-22. So far we have sold some of the VIP tickets but there are  500+ available seats. Get out and sell more. Great team building day or reward for customers—a table of 8 costs $400.00.

Paul gave a report on the Rotary International Conference held in Toronto in Late June. It was the 3rd largest ever and leads now to the 2019 Conference in Hamburg Germany June 1-4 2019. Pointed out there were some great speeches but there were some that missed opportunities. In particular a speech on how close we are on eradicating polio, made possible by the Salk vaccine has only led to where we are nowdue to the lady scientist who developed the delivery system. Also the Conference recognized the 50th anniversary of Rotoractors and reminded us they are part of Rotary and we MUST support clubs in our area.

Ian gave a keynote address outlining some of his goals for the year. He admitted so much of our fundraising efforts are focused on the first month of each new President’s term it is hard to look beyond the July effort required but all of the projects he sees for his year are dependent on a successful, profitable RibFest. Some of Ian’s goals for the year:

  1. Make the Sargeant-at-Arms position more important.
  2. Try to get our membership up to 45
  3. Re-establish/update a vision statement for our club
  4. Choose a legacy project for funds set aside each year from RibFest
  5. New public relations focus. Claire will be leading this committee
  6. Club Service (Bill’s area) charged with organizing a fun event every quarter. Bill is looking for club members to be on the entertainment committee.

Following Ian’s talk we had a presentation from Karin and Victor showing a video of several of the projects they did last year, projects they were able to participate in due to fundraising (including from us for their RibFest commitment). Last year they went to Taiwan giving time to help re-establish native plants and time with elementary school kids teaching digital literacy. Also in Vancouver they work regularly on shoreline cleanup and work making and supplying food, clothing and blankets to the Downtown Eastside. I am looking forward to welcoming their volunteers back to RIBFEST

And guess where I was volunteering on Tuesday?  The Ryan and Lucas Johansen Charity Golf Classic Golf tournament for Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation

Rainy morning.....but so much fun.
