Special Guest Speaker
David Driscoll : Former Mayor of Port Moody

Remember to make Valentines Cards. The Valentines box that Vida made is at St James well. The Deadline is on February 7th.

After the meeting this week, Glen needs half a dozen people to help sort boxes of clothing to give to different shelters.  You will all meet at Rotary World Help.  Thank you to the 6-8 people who said they would help.

Theme today is the history of Port Moody as seen by former Mayor David Driscoll.

Wise words from our past Mayor David Driscoll saying that Community and engaging people is one of the most important things we can do!
If you don’t know the answer, help solve the problem.
Start with Respect and caring!

Thank you to Gayle for the notes.
Mayor Driscoll talked about Port Moody History.  Back in the day we had:  6 or 7 sawmills in Port Moody, A Brick Yarda chemical plantPipe Manufacturer & 2 Oil Refineries

Inlet was a waste site for these companies so we had lots of pollution.
Air Quality was terrible
There were no Buses or transit
1976 BC Hydro had a plan of cleaning the environment.
We now have the best air quality in the world.

Transition of the Inlet, as Bee Hive burners and transformers were dumping PCB ‘s off the piers.
Dave went down to Seattle and came back with a plan’ “Burrard Inlet Action Plan”.
The action was to:
Engage youth projects and build a park.
Value of group’s was really important.
Sewers were put down the park to the development of San Reno.
Acquire land and a land swap and build Old orchard park.
Transit and Recycling in place.

Bill McCracken Recreation site.
Old Orchard to Rocky point pier is a history that we Value.
Gerry St Germaine got us some federal funding.
We now could get back to the inlet and have clean water.
Mount St Helen’s showed us what mice and rodents do to clean the environment and help restore a cleaner place to live.
We also re established wetlands.
Our actions are so important .
Thanks To David Driscoll for all he did for our wonderful city.

Next week our speaker is Search and Rescue.
