Cleone gave a quick update on Rotary involvement in the Port Moody Centennial celebrations

Dave Russell was our speaker today.  He talked about is recent trip to Zambia with Habitat for Humanity.  He had a very interesting slide show presentation on his visit to a little town 50 km from Lusaka.

He talked about the people, in particular the children.  His group of volunteers really connected with the children in the village.

Dave has worked with Habitat for several years at the Burnaby Habitat Village and felt he was ready for more so he decided on the trip to Zambia.  The team consisted of 12 volunteers who built two brick houses for local residents.   The local branch of Habitat for Humanity makes the selection based on need and ability to pay.  Other villagers assist in the building, it is a way of building “sweat equity” which counts towards their possible ability to eventually get their own new home.

Dave feels that the organization builds stronger communities and the group of volunteers come back stronger human beings.
