Speaker's Corner:

Darren Mumford (Pres Elect from RC of Semiamhoo) and Karan Grover spoke to us about the 2013 SASSY awards...another way that Rotary is investing in community and in youth!  Darren explained that as a community programmer for the YMCA in the Surrey/Fraser area...connecting Rotary to community to youth was a natural!  And that big things have grown from the simple idea of recognizing the achievement of young people.  He introduced us to Karan, currently a student at Panorama Secondary, President of an Interact club, participant in a trip to Mexico where wheelchairs were donated to those in need and currently also Youth Chair of the 2013 SASSY Awards. Darren explained that he is happy to be known as Karan's chauffeur!

Karan told us more:SASSY started out as a smaller fundraiser about 3 years ago and stands for SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARDS. It was the brain child of Rotarian Bill Brooks who wanted a way to recognize the work of youth in the community of Surrey.  In the second year..they sold over 500 tickets and this year..they aim to sell out the Bell Centre at 1000 plus tickets!  The event is hosted by Rotary and their major sponsors are the City of Surrey and Kwantlen College and the Surrey School District...with participation from al lthe high schools in Surrey..Karan being the youngest student to participate ..through their initiative known as Ideas 36.  Also on board are CTV, and several local papers..the Now, the Leader and the Peace arch news.

The awards are open to anyone age 16 to 21 and fall into 7 categories:

  youth leadership
  humanitarianism
  against the odds
  community service
  performance and visual arts
  athletics
  sustainability

Nominations are open to May 6 and ticket sales will begin in September til the event on Nov 1/13. Applicants go through an audition/interview process and the winners are picked by a panel. Winners receive a $1000 and $500 to donate to a charity of their choice. There are also a wide variety of sponsorship opportunities.

The event offers an opportunity to showcase young people and their accomplishments. The event has become very successful very quickly and Darren explained the goals is to have youth being the primary organizers..furthering the development of the their own leadership skills!

After hearing about SASSY..probably the most important question that could be asked..was asked...how do they feel about plagerism?  The answer..in the spirit of Rotary..was that we could feel inspired to creating a SASSY our own community!  What a great thought!  Congratulations to all involved in this inspiring effort.
