The board has approved the application for membership for Leslie Fabian.  This is her first publication.

President Dave showed us a photo from the R.I. Foundation annual report, showing our own Brian Brown working in our Friendship Garden. Dave also reminded us of the following:

25 Jan – Wednesday Evening Club Meeting
26 Jan – Thirsty Thursdays - Temperance
17 Feb - Rotary Random Act of Kindness Day
March 9-12 - RYLA Session 1  - April 6-9 - Session 2
28-30 Apr 17 - 2017 Rotary District Conference

Gary found a quick volunteer in April, who will handle attendance for the two months that Gary is in Florida (missing us the entire time).

There are still a couple of spots left for the Nan Sharp dinner on Friday, March 10th.

Orchids and Onions:  Paul Fischl had an orchid for Gene Servillo for a good job of handling a challenge with Paul's website, but Paul had a huge onion for AT&T for a phone service outage that lasted over a week.  Tom Swigert had successful cataract surgery. Abby bragged on her son's band, Manwolves, which made it to the top of the Billboard charts on the Spotify Viral listing.  Dick Peach announced the Evanston Enviornmental Film Festival which will take place over several dates.

Sgt. Dick stumped us with Great Lakes questions.  Apparently there a lot of boats and bodies at the bottom of our lakes!

Our speaker was our own Bill Logan.  Bill is a proud ETHS alum, and he was the first African-American football captain at ETHS.  He went on to play football at Western Illinois University, but he left there to join the Air Force during the Korean War.  Bill returned to Evanston to join the police department.  He remembered Dr. Martin Luther King visiting Evanston, and he shared some of his private conversations with Dr. King while he escorted him to different Evanston churches.  Dr. King gave Bill personal inspiration and advice, which Bill followed.  Dr. King emphasized the importance of education, so Bill returned to school at Northeastern University, where he completed his degree. Bill also attended the FBI Academy, where he was one of only two blacks in a class of 50. Bill went up through the ranks of the Evanston Police Department, and he eventually became their first black Sgt., Leutenant, Captain, and Chief of Police.  After retiring from the department, Bill became the director of security at ETHS.  As always, Bill's memories of his time with Dr. King is one of the highlights of our Rotary year.  We are truly privileged to have Bill as fellow Rotarian.

Learning About Rotary Is As Easy As A-B-C

ABC’s of Rotary – that about says it all! For new members, learn about Rotary – our history, our customs and traditions, and the current status of our global programs. You’ll better understand The Object of Rotary, our Four Way Test of the Things We Think, Say, or Do, and of course Service Above self. In fact, all Rotarians, new and “experienced”, will gain greater insight into what it means to be part of the world’s first service organization. A Northern Illinois Rotary event at One Rotary Center on January 23 - Follow this link for more information and to register. We're also looking for host families for out-of-town Rotarians from districts 6420 and 6450.
