Captain David S. Oppenheim enlisted in the Navy after graduating from the University of Denver. As a yeoman, serving aboard USS GEARING (DD710), he obtained an E-5 pay grade before attending Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and receiving his commission in 1973. After more than five years of active duty in the United States Navy, Captain Oppenheim attended law school at Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio, and transferred to the selective reserve. There he has remained active in the field of communications, operations, Surface Warfare and Diving & Salvage.

He remains active in representing the Navy as a Blue & Gold Officer, assisting the U.S. Naval Academy; Recruiting District Assistance Counsel (RDAC) member; and Seapower Presentation Team member with over 600 presentations. He is a lifetime member of the Naval Reserve Association and Reserve Officers Association, as well as, a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Navy Divers Association, National Association of Tugboat Sailors, the Navy League and Jewish War Veterans.

After almost 32 years in the Navy, Captain Oppenheim was transferred to the Retired Reserve on 01 December 2003. 

In his civilian occupation as an attorney, Captain Oppenheim worked for the Department of Justice for a period of over six years in the office of the United States Trustee, responsible for the supervision of bankruptcies in Colorado and Kansas. At the same time, he taught the Bankruptcy, Debtor-Creditor and Legal Accounting courses at the University of Denver College of Law. He recently taught courses in the Paralegal Program at Arapahoe Community College. In 1987, he established a law practice, DAVID S.OPPENHEIM & ASSOCIATES, P .C., specializing in the areas of general business and civil litigation, wills & estates, real estate transactions, general contracts, debtor - creditor workouts, and bankruptcy litigation. He is currently of council to the law firm of Miller & Law, P.C., in Littleton, Colorado.

Captain Oppenheim, a third generation native of Colorado, is married to Diane Marie (Schumacher) Oppenheim of Denver, Iowa, and has two married daughters, Jessica Marie Moy and Jaime Lynn Brown. He and his wife reside in Centennial, Colorado.
