Superintendent Address SVR

Dr. Ben Picard, Superintendent, Sunnyvale School District and member of the Sunnyvale Rotary Club, talked today about the School District, its programs, accomplishments and needs.  Ben is a well-known and respected community leader and has been and educator since his first teaching job in 1972.  Ben described the Sunnyvale Summer school, based on the Summer Matters program. It is a program aimed at avoiding summer learning loss.  In a small learning venue, K through 8th grade students attend summer school for one month in an academic camp-like environment and are provided educational, recreational, and nutritional support.  Approximately 900 students participated at classes held at Bishop and Lakewood elementary and Columbia Middle schools.

The school district includes 8 elementary and 2 middle schools approximately 12,000 students and employs 728 people.  Ben talked about the relationship between achievement and opportunity and the diversity that exists but is changing in the School District.  Much information about the school district is available on their website here.

A measure to maintain the current property assessment to aid local schools in on the November ballot.  In keeping with Rotary principles we cannot advise you how to vote on this matter, but can urge you as a concerned citizen to vote.
