Life in the Library Economy. Gov. Jerry Brown appointed Greg Lucas California’s 25th State Librarian in May 2014. Previously, Greg was the bureau chief for the San Francisco Chronicle and covered politics and policy at the State Capitol for nearly 20 years. The State Library’s priorities are to improve reading skills throughout the state, put library cards into the hands of every school kid and provide all Californians the information they need – no matter what community they live in. The State Library invests $10 million annually in local libraries to help them develop more innovative and efficient ways to serve their communities. Since 2015, the State Library has improved access for millions of Californians by helping connect more than half of the state’s 1,100 libraries to a high-speed Internet network that links universities, colleges, schools and libraries around the world. Greg has a degree in communications from Stanford University. A Masters in Professional Writing from the University of Southern California and plans to complete his Masters in Information Sciences at San Jose State University by January 2018. |

Since 1996 Cecily Hastings founded Inside Publications, which has grown to a portfolio of 5 neighborhood editions, reaching more than 100,000 readers a month. In September 2016 she released a new book called Inside Sacramento: The Most Interesting Neighborhood Places in America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital. It is a photo-driven guide to 101 place to eat, shop and explore that is organized into 8 city neighborhoods. It was a collaborative effort to document the wonderful locally-owned places our city has to offer. |

We have teamed up with the Rotary Club of Clarksburg to host a "Community Road Cleanup" Along the AMGEN Race Route on S River Road from West Sacramento through Clarksburg. Location: From Fire Station 42 (Jefferson and Gregory) To: County Road 141 (Turnoff to Bogle Tasting Room) MEET UP PLACE: Minor's Leap (54250 So. River Rd., Clarksburg) Join friends and neighbors for a morning of road cleanup, debris collection and recycling along 12 miles of South River Road. Coffee, Pastry and Snack Shack will be provided in the morning. Lunch to follow at the end of the event. This is a volunteer event to help clean up our part of the road through the community in preparation for the AMGEN Race. Safety equipment will be provided. Please wear long pants and suitable shoes for outdoor work. We need volunteers to assist this community effort:

He has written a daily newspaper column for The Davis Enterprise for the last 42 years, the longest-running daily newspaper column in the country. A former talk radio host at KFBK who also had a long career in sportscasting, Dunning has for the last 18 years served as daily host for the Bishop's Radio Hour, sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, and frequently appears nationally on Sirius Satellite Radio. The father of six, Dunning is a graduate of the University of California at Davis School of Law. |

About Anne Marie Schubert Anne Marie Schubert is a career prosecutor with over 25 years of law enforcement experience. As the Sacramento County District Attorney Schubert has prosecuted some of the area's most notorious and dangerous criminals - murderers , rapists and child molesters. She has also created innovative programs for the District Attorney's Office focused on catching killers and criminals using DNA evidence, helping the children of our community by combatting truancy , and honoring those citizens who have provided service to justice with the development of the annual Outstanding Citizen Awards . Anne Marie has received the Prosecutor of the Year Award and the POST ICI Instructor of the Year Award .
One of Anne Marie's pass ions is the pursuit of justice thr ugh forensic DNA evidence and cold case prosecution. She formed the DA's Cold Case Prosecution Unit in 2002, and served as its first prosecutor. She is nationally recognized as a forensic DNA expert.
Anne Marie was elected as Sacramento County's District Attorney in 2014 with the support of former District Attorney Jan Scully, Sheriff Scott Jones , law enforcement associations, and crime victims' organizations. Anne Marie was sworn into office in January 2015. |

Jan A. Nolta, Ph.D., is the Director of the Stem Cell Program at UC Davis School of Medicine, and directs the Institute for Regenerative Cures. She also serves as the Scientific Director of the large UC Davis Good Manufacturing Practice Facility, and as Scientific Director of the California State Umbilical Cord Blood Collection Program. She has been ranked as one of the “Global Top 50 Most Influential People in the Field of Stem Cells.”
The UC Davis stem cell program has over 150 basic, translational, and clinical scientists collaborating to work toward regenerative medicine-related cures for a spectrum of diseases and injuries. Dr. Nolta is helping UC Davis teams develop numerous clinical trials of gene and cell therapy, with sixteen adult stem cell therapies already in the clinic, and over twenty in the pipeline.
A scientist with more than 25 years’ experience with human stem cells and clinical trial development, Dr. Nolta has published over 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts in the stem cell field, with over 9,000 citations, and has authored 30+ book chapters. She has served on over 200 review panels for the National Institutes of Health and other grant-funding agencies, is Editor for the Journal “Stem Cells” and was editor of the Book "Genetic Engineering of Mesenchymal Stem Cells". Dr. Nolta received a prestigious five –year Transformative Grant Award from the NIH office of the Director and has been funded as Co-PI on three large disease team grants that have the goal of developing and delivering novel Phase 1 clinical trials. In these teams she works closely with physician/scientists who will deliver the treatments to patients who need them.
Dr. Nolta is a native of Northern California, trained in Los Angeles and Washington University, and has been back at UC Davis now for nearly a decade. A major driving force throughout her career has been to provide service to teams working toward novel cures, and to foster a strong sense of community and teamwork. Team training is her passion and she leads several training initiatives at UC Davis and beyond. The fields of stem cells, immunotherapy, gene therapy and regenerative medicine are poised to change the face of healthcare. The new “living medicine” preparation and delivery will be performed by large teams of experts with different expertise and backgrounds. Dr. Nolta’s Stem Cell Program is committed to fostering teamwork, training the science and healthcare work force of the future, and to continuing to improve and deliver these novel cutting edge therapies that can offer cures for patients who currently have few other options.

California is an economic powerhouse, so how can we improve it?

Allan Zaremberg Allan Zaremberg is president and chief executive officer of the CalChamber. He took over the top staff position in 1998 after six years as executive vice president and head of CalChamber’s legislative advocacy program. Enhancing the state’s economic growth has been the goal of Zaremberg’s activities. He has headed statewide ballot campaigns to close the legal loophole that permitted shakedown lawsuits, to assure adequate funding for transportation infrastructure and to oppose anti-business proposals that would have raised the cost of health care, electricity and public works. He led negotiations culminating in comprehensive reforms of workers’ compensation, endangered species laws, and other key issues. He oversees the CalChamber Business Services Division, which provides employment law expertise through handbooks, services and products, including HRCalifornia, a continually updated website. Before joining CalChamber, Zaremberg served as chief legislative advisor to and advocate for Governors George Deukmejian and Pete Wilson. Zaremberg served as a captain and flight navigator on a KC-135 jet air refueling tanker while in the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1975. He holds a B.S. in economics from Penn State University and a J.D. from the McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific, where he was a member of the Law Journal.

Mimosas, wine, a nice Lunch, and other goodies, plus transportation via a comfortable, air conditioned tour bus will be provided as we explore a beautiful local region of our State and get some insider knowledge of an important industry. We promise you a fun, beautiful and interesting half-day! Wear comfortable clothing and shoes for an easy walk in the countryside – and money to purchase locally produced goods. The Mystery Trip will take place on Saturday, June 3. We will meet at the Rotary Office (1451 River Park Drive, Suite 120) in Sacramento at 9:30. The bus will take us to Sloughhouse CA, where we will pick up participants from Elk Grove and other locations. We will then head to our destinations, returning to Sloughhouse at 3:00 and Sacramento by 3:30. The event is limited to the first 34 people who register. Cost for the event is $95 per person. Dr. Jacob Jackson is a research fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) Higher Education Center. His research includes work on college costs, college readiness, access to higher education, and college completion. Before joining PPIC, he was a postdoctoral scholar in the School of Education at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Jackson is also a former middle school and high school mathematics teacher. He holds a PhD in education from the University of California, Davis, and a master’s degree in education from the University of Missouri. |
